male RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD

n my heyday of photographing Odonata, once I got the ehang of it, the easiest dragonfly to capture was the Blue Dasher. It isn't the largest dragonfly - that honor goes to the flame Skimmer - but it does perch more often than other.

The blue dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) is a insect of the skimmer family. It is the only species in the genus Pachydiplax. It is very common and widely distributed through North America and into the Bahamas.

Although the species name longipennis means "long wings", their wings are not substantially longer than those of related species. Females do, however, have a short abdomen that makes the wings appear longer in comparison. The blue dasher grows up to 1-1.5 inches.

I am savouring the sights, sounds and smell of the ocean before I return home for a month long “stay at home” order. My postcode is one of 10 subject to lockdown due to increased corona cases. I was fortunate to be able to finish our holiday. I am fortunate to have a government that is willing to make the hard decisions for the greater good.

But it really is hard to go backwards when you have had a taste of freedom, of being able to see friends and family and walk along the beach, take photos, to be able to welcome someone into your home.

The teenagers were smiling again, doing ridiculous things to each others hair (another story), businesses were just getting started again, and friends were able to visit nursing homes once again after months of not seeing parents.

It also feels just that bit harder when it isn’t everybody, when your area is singled out.

But we are safe and will remain as long as people comply and we will hopefully control the spread..

So I am savouring the wind, the sea spray and the lullaby that is the ocean and steals my dreams.

Will catch up with you over the weekend

My previous post was of the CR 6067 in Conrail blue. Here it is in bastardized EL colors at Goodman Street Yard in May 1977. Wondering if we couldn't get a "Flare Friday" thing going on Flickr, similar to "Thirty Thursday".

It was Conrail's last day and we were heading home from visiting relatives in the Pittsburgh area. We took the long way out of town by following the Conrail main from Pittsburgh up to Conway and then stopping to visit the Jacks. Heading out from there we caught a Conrail train at Rochester and then stopped up on the hill at Aley Hill Road on the Fort Wayne Line. Conrail 6067 and a renumbered 3020 lead ELPI-A in Big Beaver, PA on May 31, 1999. This was the last Conrail train I ever saw here, a place that I caught a lot of CR trains when I lived in Beaver Falls.

Erie Lackawanna heritage is evident at Hornell, NY on March 15, 1980. The 6067 is an ex EL SD45, and there is an Erie Lackawanna boxcar in the remains of the yard beyond.

An ex Erie Lackawanna SD45 is on home rails as it leads an Eastbound Conrail freight at MP318 in West Cameron, NY on March 15, 1980. I had spent the day with Dan Hoh and Scott Reynolds around the Hornell area. It was getting late in the afternoon and as this train was working at ZY, Scott asked if he could ride the train to Gang Mills. You can see Scott hanging out the window of the 2nd unit. Dan and I chased the train down to Gang Mills to pick up Scott. The shadows were growing long in the Canisteo Valley, but we found a pocket of sun near MP318 for this photo.
