We were there in late May, and I must say that I've never seen a vista quite like this. Ninety percent of the lake was still frozen though melting quickly. The other ten percent was already a gathering place for migrating and resting Goldeneyes (see below). We counted more than 30 of them as well as a flock of Chipping sparrows along the shore. We sat and had a picnic in 63° weather. Ham on wry if you must know.

Yellowstone Lake is surrounded in part by the Red Mountains. Never heard of them? Me neither, but there they were. On the other hand, I may be facing east, in which case these are the Absorokas.

The clouds were spectacular, but they seemed to turn everything blue. The SX50 was brand new, and I found that its zoom lens performed admirably in Yellowstone. The 10mm (can go to 7) covered the lake with no aberrations. That's something.

Morning out with Steve Race (Yorkshire Coast Nature) photographing Gannets.

Image showing the Gannet having dived, emerging with the fish which it grabs as it emerges from the water. What ensues is a fight amongst numerous Gannets as they attempt to steal the fish before it is eaten.

Indigo Macaw, Lear's Macaw, Arara-azul-de-lear, Anodorhynchus leari, 70 - 75 cm. / 27.5 - 29.5 in. ENDANGERED. Dry, desert-like habitat (Caatinga) with palms. Shortly after sunrise. We arrived at the station in the darkness of early morning and could hear the parrots before we could see them.
