I always knew bees had a strange number of eyes ever since a house quiz many years ago.. but my fear of bees/wasps and all things buzzy kept me from getting too close..... until I bought my camera in 2012 :)
While in Co. Wicklow back in June, I stayed in a beautiful cottage and the owner had the most gorgeous flower garden and of course, he was a beekeeper! I followed this little guy around for quite some time until I got just the shot I wanted.... and for anyone who can't spot them... there are 5, yes that's right, 5 eyes on a bee!!! Two compound eyes and three mini ocelli eyes :)
Looking out this morning at yet another cold and wet dull day - where oh where did our Summer go?
Thank you for views, comments and faves on yesterday's lake reflection pic - I appreciate your kind messages of thoughtfulness and I will try and get caught up as soon as I can with all your amazing work!.
I hope you all have a lovely Wednesday :)
Macro of a cicada. Two large compound eyes and three ocelli. Neotibicen dorsatus, the bush cicada or grand western cicada
17 year Cicada just emerging this morning. It was still a bit dark, and camera was on a low speed--my first time using a tripod for an insect. Worked since the Cicada was not moving much. I've seen quite a few in the past week or so. Below is another photo showing all 5 eyes.

"I see the impossible work being done by my friends at the federal agencies, the Pentagon, Nato, Five Eyes and the intelligence community. They are doing the impossible, for the ungrateful and with a fraction of the budgets required to render ta viable defense." - James Scott, senior fellow, Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology (ICIT) and Center for Cyber Influence Operations Studies (CCIOS)

A shot taken by our friend Iwona, but I still was giving her some suggestions to adjust settings check if everyone is visible and so on. :)) I like the result. Especially the mood and this lighting.
It is natural light falling down from window on the left of the camera.
