I was making a brief tour through Toronto’s Kensington Market area before meeting a friend for lunch. It was a bright overcast day today with sun breaking through from time to time and with a hint of fall in the air. This picture was made on the brink of the last weekend before school starts.
The Market (as it is locally known) is a colorful neighborhood filled with small mom and pop stores and totally lacking in major brand name businesses. It is home to artists and musicians as well as local shopkeepers. I noticed this colorful doorway to a small shop and thought it would make a bright, cheery background which would have “Market” written all over it. I just needed a stranger that would fit.
Lucky for me this young man came along with his newsboy hat and juggling a cup of coffee and an armful of folded uniforms. I say “luckily” because I’m not that patient about waiting in a chosen location but prefer to keep on the move with my eye peeled.
I stopped him, introduced myself and explained the project. “Sure. Why not” was his cheerful reply. Hands were shaken without dropping the uniforms. Meet Lukus who works in a poultry store down Kensington Avenue just a few stores from where we met. “What do you do at the poultry shop?” I asked. “Anything they tell me to do” was his smiling reply. I’m just returning from picking up uniforms from the laundry right now.
I explained how I wanted him positioned in front of the doorway and quickly realized that the reflector would help the photo. We had a bit of a problem in that I needed him to hold the reflector and his hands were busy. He started to put down the coffee but I said I thought the coffee would add a nice, spontaneous touch, reflective of how we met. Not wanting to get the clean uniforms dirty by putting them down, he handed them to me and I tucked them under my arm and positioned the reflector for him. The photos were taken and I returned the uniforms.
Lukus is 25 and comes from Newfoundland on Canada’s east coast. He lived in Toronto for two years, returned to Newfoundland for two years, and has been back in Toronto for two years. “So, you could say I’ve lived her 4 years but I’m a Newfie.” I asked what he does when he’s not at work at the poultry shop and he said he is a video editor and musician. “I just scored the music for a documentary so that’s my recent proud achievement.” He has a website: www.lukusbenoit.bandcamp.com
When I asked Lukus if he has a personal philosophy he smiled and said “Yes. Party all the time.” “Oh” I said, “So you’re a party animal?” He laughed and said “Yeah, pretty much.”
I thanked him and wished him luck in his work and he wished me success with my photo project. Thank you Lukus for participating in 100 Strangers. You are Stranger #590 in round 6 of my project.

Baldwin 590/794 on the way home to the WHHR from Beddgelert. We stopped on the way back to pose at one of the Heritage Group's new name boards showing where the orignal halt was.
This was the first day of service 590.
Following the Abellio Surrey network review (effective 5th April 2014), the 441 no longer goes through Stanwell Moor, with the 557 doing so instead. However, the 557 doesn't serve Staines, which is the nearest town, so Surrey CC have 'beefed up' the 591 timetable to improve the link between the two. The 591 is a Carlone minibus service, running from the backstreets of Stanwell Moor, via the backstreets of Stanwell to Staines (then on to Staines Sainsbury's).
Some new additional Stanwell Moor - Staines journeys, numbered 590, have been added - and these run directly via Stanwell Moor Road. On Saturdays (when the 591 had not operated before), the new 590 is run by Bear Buses, and their anonymous white Dart KP02 PVF is seen here at Staines bus station prior to working the last trip of the day from Staines at 1530. It runs four return trips, two hours apart, and is interworked with the 305.
The 441 used to serve Stanwell Moor from stand 8 at Staines bus station, and indeed the 71 and 441 both still stop at that stand to go past Stanwell Moor on the main road. So the 590 logically went to stand 8, and left punctually, with correct blinds. All good.
Unfortunately, the 591 goes from stand 1, and that's where Surrey CC have added the new timetable and 590 e-plates. Not that it really mattered, as there weren't any passengers.
On Mondays - Fridays, an early morning 590 round trip will be run by Abellio Surrey. The off-peak Carlone 591 journeys remain roughly the same as now, with Carlone themselves running the last 591 trip out of Staines back as a 590, and then a later peak journey from Staines (dep 1710) as a 590 too.
590s don't serve the back streets of Stanwell Moor (i.e. Hithermoor Road).
