Stokenham Church is dedicated to St Michael and All Angels. It was however previously dedicated to St Barnabas and prior to that to St Humbert the Confessor.
It was rebuilt in 1431 incorporating some parts of an earlier 14th century church. There has been a church here certainly since 1198 as there are records of a dispute of the ownership. A nearby holy well must have added importance to the church. There was a manor house nearby which during the reign of King John (1199 to 1216) belonged to Mathew Fitzherbert, nothing remains of it today.
