Parked in a lot of some of the craziest exotics. I spent quite a bit of time with them. You would too if there was a gray 670 next to you haha.
Every once in a while a Stranger encounter puts me off balance and managing the interaction or the photo (or both) is like balancing on a tightrope. This encounter was one of those.
I had just begun my photo walk and spotted this sharply-dressed man entering the campus of the downtown Toronto university that I frequent. His well put-together look and a bit of a swagger caught my attention immediately and when I saw him sit down to take a bit of a break I figured my opportunity had presented itself.
I approached him and introduced myself and explained my request. He responded that he did not speak English but rather than terminating the conversation as people sometimes do when they want to avoid that awkwardness, he seemed willing to subject himself to my agonized version of preschool French. Meet James from Quebec.
After a brief hesitation he more or less took control by commanding me to proceed but only one photo. He posed against the nearby boulder in a way that was similar to what I had in mind but I had hoped to distance him a bit from the boulder. He indicated it was this or nothing. Sunglasses? No - they were going to stay on. Ok. I quickly understood the “rules of engagement.” I knew I wanted to include a bit more of his clothing because I felt it was an important part of the story, but when he saw this photo he wagged his finger at me and commanded a full length shot.
I explained I would have to exchange lenses but was happy to do so. “No zoom?” he asked. I said I didn’t have a zoom and changed lenses. He posed with his hand over his mouth as I lined up the photo and, realizing that resistance was futile, I went ahead with his desired pose. Sometimes if a subject has their own idea, it’s worthwhile to go with it even if it’s a bit different from what I had in mind.
When he issued approval of the full-length photo, I did my best to explain the project making frequent mention of internet as I gave him my contact card. He seemed to be saying he didn’t have internet (I could have misunderstood) but he requested my phone number. Neither of us had a pen (and to tell the truth I was a bit reluctant to hand out my phone number) at which point he pronounced “No phone number very bad. Not professional” while wagging his finger at me in disapproval.
I tried to explain this wasn’t a professional project but was strictly amateur and he said “No photo” as if really put-off. I shrugged and said ok, prepared to delete the photos. Meanwhile he was saying “No phone number - $500, no $50,000 for the photo.”
By this point I really was feeling put off by all the push-pull of this exhausting interaction. I shrugged, saying I would have to get a better job to afford his rate. I shook his hand and thanked him anyway, indicating I would not use the photo to which he replied “Ok, a gift.” I thanked him and wished him well. I think his attitude comes across in the photos.
I departed before he changed his mind and I used the next few minutes to settle my jangled nerves from what had been an a bit of an ordeal. Boy, I'm glad encounters like this one are few and far between. Too many of these would age me rapidly.
100 Stranger encounters come in all flavors and I’m really not sure what was going on. If this was humor, there was not much hint that this was the case. I think, rather, that I was dealing with a sharply-dressed fellow who likes to have the upper hand.
Thank you James (I think) for participating in 100 Strangers. You are Stranger #560 in Round 6 of my project and you definitely cut a dapper image on the streets of Toronto.
