Winter driving in Alaska is an exhilarating experience. Because of the cold, hoar frost, and snow, - the lane markings on the roads are not visible, and the signs that guide your way are most often obliterated by snow. These conditions are acceptable to Alaskans that know their way around - but must be horrific for newcomers to our state.

We are quickly gaining daylight, and it has only been three weeks since we celebrated the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. It sure lifts our spirits to see the sun rising a little higher above the horizon each day.

At Kenai Municipal Airport to take on another load of fuel for delivery. This aircraft had an interesting history, as it was one of ten C-54s to see service with the RAF. The first was EW999, Churchill's personal aircraft, and this was the second, KL977 (ex-42-72442). It reached Britain in February 1945 and was sent to No 232 Sqn in India, along with KL978. Post-war the aircraft was returned to the USA and became a US Navy R5D-3, Bu No. 91994.

N3054V was destroyed in a fatal crash just after takeoff from Fairbanks on 23 April 2024, the two crew losing their lives - a tragic end to this aircraft’s long and varied career.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Fifty seven metres at 11:23am on an overcast morning on Friday 3rd March 2023, off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.

Here we see an adult Female Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), a bird of prey belonging to the kestrel group of the falcon family Falconidae. It is also known as the European kestrel, Eurasian kestrel, Common Kestrel or Old World kestrel. In the United Kingdom, where no other kestrel species commonly occurs, it is generally just called "kestrel".

Female kestrels are an unremarkable shade of mid-brown, with their upper parts a richer shade than their breast and underparts. Their wingtips are darker brown than the rest of their bodies, and their tails are light brown, barred with darker, almost black banding. Female kestrels’ bodies are speckled all over with mottled darker markings.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Sixty one metres at 11:41am on a summer morning on Wednesday 2nd June 2021, off Hythe Avenue and Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.

Here we see a Mother Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) feeding her baby. Starlings are Passerines measuring up to 21cm in length with up to a 42cm wingspan. They are most abundant in the South East of England and are capable of mimicking many sounds around them and despite being a common sight in UK gardens, their decline elsewhere sees them on the red conservation list.

The Lotus Europa name is used on two distinct mid-engined GT coupé cars built by Lotus Cars. The original Europa and its variants comprise the Lotus Types 46, 47, 54, 65 and 74, and were produced between 1966 and 1975. The second vehicle is the Type 121 Europa S, a Lotus Elise-derived design produced from 2006 to 2010. The Europa concept is believed to have originated during 1963 with drawings done by Ron Hickman, then director of Lotus Engineering, for Lotus'a bid for the Ford GT40 racing car project. When that contract was lost to Lola Cars, Chapman chose to use Hickman's highly-efficient aerodynamic design, which had a drag coefficient of only Cd 0.29, as the basis for a new mid-engined production model originally intended to succeed the Lotus 7. By the mid 1960's, the mid-engine vehicle configuration was well-established as the optimal design for Grand Prix cars, however almost no road vehicles yet used this arrangement. Lotus planned the Europa to be a volume-produced, two-seater mid-engined sports coupe built to reasonable cost, quite an ambitious goal for the time. Like all Lotus vehicles of the era, the Europa was designed and built following Chapman's oft-stated philosophy of automotive design: "Simplify, then add lightness". To this end, a number of ingenius design approaches were made by Lotus to allow it to economically overcome the many challenges presented by the novel mid-engined arrangement. The Europa S2, or Type 54, was introduced in April 1968 (from chassis Number 0645 onwards). It used the same Renault engine as the Type 46, but offered a number of refinements, including electric windows, fully adjustable seats, a new interior, and a polished wooden fascia for the dashboard. Per request of the automotive insurance industry, Lotus switched to bolt fasteners (instead of resin bonding) to attach body to frame. A small number of Type 54s were modified to be "federalized", that is, made suitable for export to the United States. The Federal Type 54 was slightly modified. They were actually recalled because of the headlamps being too low (a "bug eye" headlamp raiser was to be installed). The Federal 54 had the low fenders of the European 54, but larger engine of the type 65. In 1969-70, the Type 65 (also known as S2 Federal) was born specifically for export to the US, with additional changes to the body, chassis, suspension and the powerplant to better comply with U.S. D.O.T. standards. Production of the 54 continued for cars supplied to the rest of the world. Among the changes, the engine was a slightly modified emission controlled Renault 16TL 1565 cc engine producing 80 hp rather than the 1470 cc engine of the Type 54. The front suspension was changed to make the front end of the car taller along with taller front fenders to raise the headlamps. Road & Track magazine tested the Federal S2 and recorded 0-60 mph in 9.6 seconds with a top speed of 116 mph (187 km/h). Lotus produced 3,615 S2s. The Swiss Lotus importer also made two special versions fitted with the Renault 16 TS type 807 engine, the "Europa Hemi 807" and the fuel injected "Europa Black Shadow 807". The Hemi 807 had 105 PS (77 kW) SAE and could reach 200 km/h (124 mph), while the Black Shadow had 137 PS (101 kW) on tap. The Black Shadow also received a five-speed gearbox.[11] These cars had a wider track, special wheels and stickers, white indicator lights up front, and featured extractor vents high on the side panel behind the rear door. The fuel injection system was from Kugelfischer. Production of the original Lotus Europa ceased in 1975, with a total of 9,230 cars of all models having been built. The 3⁄4‑ton WC-54 was designed as successor to the previous 1/2-ton, 4×4, G-505 models WC-9, WC-18, and WC-27 Dodge Ambulance trucks. Although based on the 3/4-ton Dodge "Beep" chassis, which front and rear axles featured wider tracks of 64+3⁄4 in (1.64 m), the 3/4-ton ambulance versions retained a longer wheelbase, very close to that of the previous half-tonners, as well as somewhat rounded, upward sloping nose sheetmetal, instead of the fully horizontal, flat and wider engine-cover of the main 3⁄4‑ton redesigned WC-models. The WC-54s also had adjusted suspension to make their ride softer.

The WC-53 had space for the driver and four to seven patients plus a medic. The four fold-away bunk stretchers allowed for carry of four litter patients while three (or four) ambulatory patients, plus a medic could squeeze in to the floor area. Because of its intended role, the WC-54 featured a large matrix cab heater fitted on the inner firewall, providing comfort for patients and crew. It was fitted with a foldaway step to its rear to allow easier access for stretcher bearers and injured personnel.

T4-5 / 911-5 was noted at Riem on 19 April 1974 together with Spanish Air Force Convair 440 T14-3. A number of Ejército del Aire C-54s were reported at Riem and nearby Neubiberg Air Base in the early 1970s.

Information from ruudleeuw.com:

Delivered to the USAAF as 42-72719 on 13Jul45 and was transferred to the Spanish Air Force in 1959, initially serialled "90-9", later "901-5" and operating for Gruppo EM as "911-05" (coded 901-5, later 911-5 and later 911-05 according to joebaugher.com). It reached the end of its service life in 1976. The cockpit section is on display at the Museo del Aire, Cuatro Vientos, Madrid.

The Ejército del Aire received 6 C-54D's (designated T.4) from the USAF in 1959 and a further 11 were purchased through other sources (models including C-54, C-54A, C-54B, C-54G, C-54E and R5D-3). The last were withdrawn from active service in 1976 or 1977.

This C-54 was in service with "91 Grupo de Estado Mayor" as a VIP transport. It was nicknamed "Vaca Sagrada" (Sacred Cow) (Israel Gándara on airliners.net)
