The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is the most important church of Lugano. It contains the famous Renaissance fresco of the Passion and the Crucifixion by the Italian artist Bernardino Luini.
Its construction was started in 1499 by Franciscan friars and was consecrated in 1515. It was restored in 1929/30. Next to the church, there was originally a Franciscan monastery built in 1490. This was dissolved in 1848 and in 1852/54 a hotel was built on its grounds; it was then raised by two floors and converted into the Hotel Palace in 1903, which kept part of the ancient convent’s cloister. The church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is famous for its Renaissance fresco of the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ by Italian artist Bernardino Luini, whose artwork, dating back to 1529, is the most important example of Lombard Renaissance in Switzerland. The monumental fresco is located on the church’s dividing wall and depicts several figures from the Passion of Christ. The Last Supper fresco on the nave’s south wall (originally located in the refectory) and the beautiful Virgin Mary with baby Jesus and St John on the eastern wall of the first side chapel (which was once the lunette of the portal leading to the cemetery) are also by Luini. Both works show a strong influence by Leonardo.
Grandpa was always a little eccentric and when he purchased a run down city tram and converted it into a Weiner Wagon the whole family thought he had lost his marbles. Gramps is dead now and you are the lucky owner of his hot dog tram. To your surprise, it turns a profit and is a favorite with locals. Needless to say you are the envy of your cousins who inherited his toenail clipping museum.... not nearly as popular a location...

'Lesia' needs a wash, but still looks pretty good on a fine Spring Saturday morning.
The loco has just been refuelled from a road tanker and buffered up to its train of 17 PCA tanks. The shunter is about to couple up, and do a visual check of the consist.
New bogie tanks are being built to replace the four wheelers (which in the drivers words are 'knackered'), they should be in service in the late summer of 2025.
Until then this service will run with a short consist of around 16/17 wagons meaning that three workings per week will be needed to provide enough alumina for the smelter. In the past the train usually ran with 24 tanks.
The freight is the 6S45 09.08 departure to Fort William. A remarkable journey, but one that made sense up until 2012 when the larger smelter a few miles from here at Lynemouth closed. It had been in operation since 1974, and was the reason for importing alumina to Blyth.
Peter the driver will take the train to Morpeth, a journey of only some 15 miles which includes a reversal at Bedlington.
The second driver takes the train to Helensburgh - around 180 miles - with the final leg of 85 miles by driver number three.
Arrival at Fort William is scheduled to be at 21.54, a journey of just under 300 miles in nearly 13 hours.

Parco Cascata delle Marmore
Il fiume Velino percorre gran parte dell'altopiano che circonda, e a valle si trova naturalmente intralciato dalla presenza di massicci calcarei e dall'assenza di un adeguato letto dove scorrere. Questa particolare configurazione geologica ha portato, nel corso delle ere, alla formazione di una palude stagnante, nociva per la salubrità dei luoghi. Nel 271 a.C., il console romano Manio Curio Dentato ordina la costruzione di un canale (il Cavo Curiano) per far defluire le acque stagnanti in direzione del salto naturale di Marmore: da lì, l'acqua precipitava direttamente nel fiume Nera, affluente del Tevere.
Tuttavia, la soluzione di questo problema ne creava un altro: in concomitanza delle piene del Velino, l'enorme quantità d'acqua trasportata dal Nera minacciava direttamente il centro abitato di Terni. Questo fu motivo di contenzioso tra le città DI Terni e di Rieti, tanto che nel 54 a.C. si giunse a porre la questione direttamente al Senato Romano: Rieti era rappresentata da Cicerone, Terni da Aulo Pompeo. La causa si risolse con un nulla di fatto, e le cose rimasero così per i secoli successivi.
La mancata manutenzione del canale portò però a una diminuzione del deflusso delle acque e a un principio di impaludamento della piana reatina. Dopo varie peripezie, nel 1422 un nuovo canale venne costruito per ripristinare l'originaria portata del fiume (Cavo Reatino o Cavo Gregoriano, per via dell'intervento di Gregorio XII).
Papa Paolo III, nel 1545, diede mandato ad Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane di aprire un altro canale, la Cava Paolina, che però riuscì ad assolvere il proprio compito solo per 50 anni. Si pensò allora di ampliare la Cava Curiana e di costruire un ponte regolatore, una sorta di valvola che avrebbe permesso di regolare il deflusso delle acque. Quest'opera fu inaugurata nel 1598 da Papa Clemente VIII, che aveva affidato l'incarico progettuale a Giovanni Fontana (ingegnere). Ovviamente, il canale prese il nome di Cava Clementina.
Nei due secoli seguenti, l'opera creò non pochi problemi alla piana sottostante, ostacolando il corretto deflusso del Nera e provocando l'allagamento delle campagne circostanti. Per ordine di Papa Pio VI, nel 1787, l'architetto Andrea Vici operò direttamente sui balzi della cascata, dandole l'aspetto attuale e risolvendo finalmente la maggior parte dei problemi.
Nel XIX secolo le acque della cascata cominciarono a essere utilizzate per la loro forza motrice: nel 1896, le neonate Acciaierie di Terni alimentavano i loro meccanismi sfruttando 2 m³ d'acqua del Cavo Curiano. Negli anni successivi, la cascata cominciò a essere sfruttata intensamente per la produzione di energia idroelettrica.
La Cascata delle Marmore è una cascata a flusso controllato, tra le più alte d'Europa, potendo contare su un dislivello complessivo di 165 m, suddiviso in tre salti.
Il nome deriva dai sali di calcio presenti sulle rocce che sembrano simili a marmo.
Le acque della cascata sono sfruttate intensamente per la produzione di energia elettrica, nella centrale di Galleto. Questo fa sì che la cascata vera e propria non sia continuamente funzionante, ma per la maggior parte del tempo si riduca alle dimensioni di un torrente. Il bacino del lago di Piediluco funge da serbatoio idrico per la centrale, costruita nel 1929, capace di produrre energia elettrica con una potenza di circa 530 MW
La leggenda
Sulle origini della cascata c'è una leggenda: una ninfa di nome Nera si innamorò di un bel pastore: Velino. Ma Giunone, gelosa di questo amore, trasformò la ninfa in un fiume, che prese appunto il nome di Nera. Allora Velino, per non perdere la sua amata, si gettò a capofitto dalla rupe di Marmore. Questo salto, destinato a ripetersi per l'eternità, si replica ora nella Cascata delle Marmore.

Cleveleys, Lancashire
A late afternoon trip with Eddie Coulson, and a return one for me, to Mary's Shell at Cleveleys. The weather forecast was promising with an expected high tide at 18:54. A good few hours was spent on the promenade steps watching the tide roll in but I think the nautical people mis-sold us the term "term high"... it barely covered the base of the sculpture and didn't even touch the base step of the promenade and to think we both brought our wellies.
