More baby grebes. There were enough cruising the wetlands on this day I lost track of which ones I was photographing. I was looking for the youngest, and that little diver looks mighty small. I think the parents are saying, "did you see where number 3 went?"
As for the nest I posted a week or so back, where you could actually see the parent checking the 3 eggs, she was still sitting on them as of this morning. I'm running out of time before I head out on the road, so I sure hope I get to see the chicks before I leave.
Campos de Castilla, Sepúlveda, Segovia.
En estos campos de la tierra mía,
y extranjero en los campos de mi tierra
yo tuve patria donde corre el Duero
por entre grises peñas
y fantasmas de viejos entinares,
allá en Castilla, mística y guerrera;
Castilla la gentil, humilde y brava;
Castilla del desdén y de la fuerza,
en estos campos de mi Andalucía,
¡oh tierra en que nací! , cantar quisiera.
Tengo recuerdos de mi infancia, tengo
imágenes de luz y de palmeras,
y en una gloria de oro,
de lueñes campanarios con cigüeñas,
de ciudades con calles sin mujeres,
bajo un cielo de añil, plazas desiertas
donde crecen naranjos encendidos
con sus frutas redondas y bermejas;
y en un huerto sombrío, el limonero
de ramas polvorientas
y pálidos limones amarillos,
que el agua clara de la fuente espeja,
un aroma de nardos y claveles
y un fuerte olor de albahaca y hierbabuena;
imágenes de grises olivares
bajo un tórrido sol que aturde y ciega,
y azules y dispersas serranías
con arreboles de una tarde inmensa;
Antonio Machado.

A tree hollow or tree hole is a semi-enclosed cavity that has naturally formed in the trunk or branch of a tree. They are found mainly in old trees, whether living or not. Hollows form in many species of trees, and are a prominent feature of natural forests and woodlands, and act as a resource or habitat for a number of vertebrate and invertebrate animals. A tree hollow is a cavity in a living tree.
“like an old oak tree that no longer grows / as time went by, i got hollow.
Song Home by Aron Wright
I don't know. It's summer. I don't do much in the summer. Dream of Fall and places to go. Lots of yard work occasionally brings some macro opportunities. This guy is an amazing example of determination and tenacity in my book. It's also a bit of an annoyance. You see, it builds a humongous web from the eaves, down to the giant green recycling can and across the walkway to the plants. The determination is that I walk through it regularly, and it continues to restring and rebuild for me the next time I go that way. Yesterday I was ready - figured it would have roped off my recycling can one more time so I stopped right before I put my face in it. I circled around the house for the camera inside and came out on the sunny side for the shot. Sat on a stool and put the blue sky behind it. I think it hauls the prey it finds higher into the eaves and home base. One day ... maybe today ...
I coulda cropped a little tighter but I really wanted you to get a feel for how big this web really is ... check the spider large for the 4 eyes.
