So this is spring in Ohio. After a dearth of snow for most of winter, Friday night brought a widespread 3-6 inches of snow across northern Ohio. Helped by Lake Huron and Erie, the Bellevue area got douched with an additional 6 inches, totaling over a foot of snow. In a winter wonderland, the AC/DC conversion unit sits tied down at Kenny Rd in Bellevue, OH on an Edon, OH bound empty grain train #51Z.

A west on the Whitethorne! This used to be a rare occurrence, but it is becoming almost a daily thing anymore. The line is primarily used for heavy loaded eastbound trains out of Bluefield due to the lesser grade compared to the Christiansburg side. Now with multiple trains tying down between Roanoke and Pelton, along with track work, wests have been traversing the line more and more to get to Bluefield. With winter quickly approaching, the leaves are disappearing from the trees, revealing certain things obscured during the summer as westbound NS grain train 51Z rolls through the community of Elkhorn, WV, on the afternoon of November 9, 2019.
Norfolk Southern Dash 9-44CW 9151 was set out by 51Z earlier in the night at "Troyton" north of Delaware, Ohio. Over a period of about 20-minutes the earth rotated enough to see the motion in the stars. This photo was created from 41 stacked 30-second exposures.

Norfolk Southern AC44C6M number 4001 leads grain train 51Z across the double-track truss bridge in Ashville, Ohio. This unit is one of two motors wearing the blue and grey paint scheme signifying their conversion from DC to AC traction locomotives. 4001 was built as NS 8879 in 1995 and was underwent the rebuild last year.
As the rain begins to set in on this Easter afternoon, NS 51Z gains speed up as it works it's way up Christiansburg grade. The train stalled just about a mile east of this spot on the slippery rails.

A solo ES40DC leads empty grain train 51Z as it diverges off of the NS Chicago Line at CP 502 and heads south over the IHB's Kankakee Line. The Arcelor Mittal Indiana Harbor administration building stands alongside the rest of the massive steel mill infrastructure surrounding this junction.

On December 28, 2015, both units 4000 and 4001 were unveiled with a modified version of the special DC to AC paint scheme. The front logo was changed from gold to white with a black horse, while the rear logo was changed from blue to white with a black horse. The "horsehead" logos on each side of the engine compartment were changed from blue to black. Units were rebuilt by American Motive Power, Inc. (AMP) in Dansville, NY, under contract with GE. The rebuilding included conversion to AC traction utilizing GE electrical components, new electrical cabinet, replacement of the existing crew cab and low short hood with a new GE widenose and cab, new replacement trucks, and additional weight was added to bring the units up to 432,000 pounds when fully loaded with supplies.
