Looking through my catalog I see that after my trips I would look at the images for a short period of time until our next trip or other type of adventure. Now I see there was a lot more to investigate within the tons of pictures I took on the vacations
Chaos
Artist Statement: I created this artwork to show the chaos that has become of our senior year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a senior in 2021, we are separated from our friends, families, and teachers as we make one of the biggest decisions of our lives. This portrait is of a friend of mine, her senior ring is pictured to show this correlation. This year seniors must brave this path on our own, and sometimes it feels as if it is engulfing us from the inside out. This internal dread creates a sort of chaos in our lives, when our senior year is supposed to be filled with fun activities and preparations. Although this experience can be terrifying, we have outlets such as art to allow us expression of our emotions. This piece was cathartic, allowing me to express the hardships of this year in a graphic, colorful way. I used many layers of oil pastel, first working on colorful under-paintings then blending them with upper layers of toned down colors. I used a sharp tool to scrap away bits of color, adding highlights and definition. I also used white acrylic paint to add highlights, such as on the eye and the tentacles. Surrealist elements are displayed with the juxtaposition of the tentacles rolling out of her mouth and eyes. Also, extreme colors and proportion distortions are used to give the work a surrealist vision.
