From a distance, this looks like a Norman Rockwell illustration.

But if you look at it more closely, you notice the participants on the float don't really project that 4th of July spirit. Where are the smiles? In my opinion, everyone except the tow-headed little boy looks preoccupied with something that's happening outside the frame. A parade float is a stage, and the people on the float are actors who have a role to play from the moment the float enters the parade route until the parade is over. Not so here, in my opinion.
