Spitsbergen / Svalbard, Day Seven, June 22, 2016: Fuglefjord, Sallyhamna, Virgohamna, Smeerenburgbreen, Gullybukta.
This was our second polar bear sighting, this time another female bear working her way up further north in search of food.
Over a period of a few hours, we tracked this bear from our Zodiacs, as the bear walked along the long coast of one of the islands, then swimming over to another island and continuing to walk.
I took several hundreds of shots of this bear, and most of them look good or interesting in some way. I have not had the time to study them all in detail.
I am uploading about 30 of them to flickr... That's a lot of photos of one bear, but for those who have not been close to polar bears, I hope it gives a sense for these amazing and incredibly lonely animals.

Well, it's that time of the year again. The reminiscing takes over and the crate-digging commences.
Two similar yet different snoot noses roll 491 towards Glenwood with classic trailing tonnage as per usual. The eclectic grain and potash cuts that have been a staple on the former SOO for decades now are slowly but surely vanishing from the high iron as I type away. The era of ribbed PS-4750's, among the Thrall and Evans variants, is quickly approaching the FRA maximum length of service, which will continue to strip the former routes of the classic feel that has already been greatly reduced due to signal and locomotive replacements.
