Hier komt trein 159 binnen op spoor 1.

View from our ICE train at Liège-Guillemins station (Wallonia, Belgium) - one of Europe's newest and most spectacular larger railway stations.
We were on our return rail journey via Bonn and Brussels, at the end of our holiday in the Swiss Alps. We had we left Bonn on a local train, and changed at Cologne (Köln) for an ICE train to Brussels (Bruxelles Midi), Belgium, where we then took a Eurostar train for St.Pancras International, London. By coincidence, this gave me the chance to photograph (and contrast) the great arched canopies of different ages, of three famous railway stations all in one day - Cologne Central (Köln Hauptbahnhof), Liège-Guillemins and London St.Pancras. It also allowed me to add a few more shots of Liège-Guillemins to add to those I'd taken the year before when we stayed in Liège.
THE VIEW
This view shows how the entire station is open on the eastern side giving an almost uninterrupted and contrasted view with the older (?mostly 19th Century) city area (rue Paradis and beyond) outside the station. I have wondered though whether the openness of the station platforms makes them cold draughty places for passengers to wait for their trains. The view is framed by the main canopy of the station whose arch runs parallel to the platforms instead of across them as in most older and traditional station designs. The platforms are above street level on this eastern side of the station.
BACKGROUND NOTE ABOUT THE STATION
This is one of Europe's newest and most spectacular larger railway stations. It was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, and opened in 2009, to replace an older one, and to incorporate track alterations to accommodate international high speed train services. The architecture is best appreciated in the photos on the architect's own website (see above), but I've tried to capture it too in other photos in this series. On Google Satellite it appears as a large space-age blister.
TRAIN NOTE
Here is the German ICE train we were travelling on when I took this shot, and here is exactly the same train set (Tz 4607 Hannover) passing through Liège-Guillemins in the opposite direction, almost exactly a year before. (Also, compare the station canopies in these shots.)
