Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death~ Pink Floyd

We stay a little longer in the theme of high-speed trains, but take a brief flashback to a remarkable period in Belgium. When Line 1 was temporarily closed in August 2025, all Eurostars and TGVs were diverted via Line 94. As a result, these usually rare visitors suddenly appeared on routes where you would never normally see them — a unique opportunity for photographers seeking a bit of variety in their high-speed captures.
One of those locations was Saintes, a quiet spot in the rolling countryside between Halle and Enghien. On 19 August 2025, I stood there in the gentle morning light, which bathed the fields and the passing trains in a warm golden glow. The air was clear, the maize stood tall and vividly green, and the silence was only broken by the faint hum of the overhead wires.
At 7:48 a.m., this Eurostar from Paris Nord to Amsterdam appeared at full speed on the horizon — the first one of the day. The characteristic burgundy-red livery of the train contrasted beautifully with the fresh green tones of the landscape, as the sun slowly climbed higher above the tree line.
A brief yet memorable moment: the charm of an exceptional diversion, captured at the perfect time of day. Mornings like this remind us how special it is to see high-speed trains away from their usual dedicated lines — and how the soft light of a summer morning can make even the fastest trains seem to slow down in the frame.

Located in the constellation of Virgo (The Virgin), around 50 million light-years from Earth, the galaxy NGC 4535 is truly a stunning sight to behold. Despite the incredible quality of this image, taken from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, NGC 4535 has a hazy, somewhat ghostly, appearance when viewed from a smaller telescope. This led amateur astronomer Leland S. Copeland to nickname NGC 4535 the “Lost Galaxy” in the 1950s.
The bright colors in this image aren’t just beautiful to look at, as they actually tell us about the population of stars within this barred spiral galaxy. The bright bluish colors, seen nestled amongst NGC 4535’s long, spiral arms, indicate the presence of a greater number of younger and hotter stars. In contrast, the yellower tones of this galaxy’s bulge suggest that this central area is home to stars which are older and cooler.
This galaxy was studied as part of the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby Galaxies (PHANGS) survey, which aims to clarify many of the links between cold gas clouds, star formation, and the overall shape and other properties of galaxies. On Jan. 11, 2021, the first release of the PHANGS-HST Collection was made publicly available.

On my recent trip, I wanted to find new ways of looking at the forest. One day I took a drive, stopping randomly at ordinary places, not parks, not landmarks, just roadside pullouts. At this location I noticed an old 4WD road into the bush, and hiked it for a few hundred metres until it faded and disappeared in a dense tangle of undergrowth.
The forest here was an unexceptional mix of red alder, bigleaf maple, western red cedar, western hemlock, and so on. Beneath my feet, the fallen leaves were already breaking down, turning into the next layer of soil. I spent half an hour with the tripod and macro lens, searching for the least colourful, earthiest looking leaf litter. A light rain was falling. Surfaces were shiny. Everywhere I pointed my lens I saw intense beauty.
