On 22nd May 1986 the 16:03 Liverpool to Newcastle service, 1E88 takes the slow line via Tyne Yard at Ouston Junction in the capable hands of 45126. The shadows are now very long, this was the final shot of the day. The locomotive is rather grimy with mainly deposits from the brake blocks, apparently the Class 45s had quite an appetite for them on TP duties, a mix of a large number of station stops, high speeds on the ECML, the gradients of the Standedge route and the high weight of the locomotive

45126, working the 07-17 Derby to Penzance is held at the Aller Jn Down Main Home Signal to allow 45144 'Royal Signals' to come off the branch with the 11-28 Paignton to Manchester Piccadilly. 15th June 1985

The weathering is based on it's general condition circa 1982/3, think those windows need cleaning.

The processing on this roll seems to have been below par with totally washed out highlights. On the last day of August 1986, the 14:10(SUN) Newcastle to Poole service, 1O09, passes Birtley a few miles into the journey with 45126 providing the traction.

Within a few minutes of the northerly passage of the Freightliner Mountsorrel service, a more colourful working turned up, this time in the form of the regular lunchtime Doncaster to Toton rails service. With continuing dramatic skies, a vista over the old industrial are of Parkgate and aldwarke and a GBRf (Great Britain Rail freight) class 66, 66754, comes into view along the up line towards Masbrough north junction. This in one of the 6 loco which was amongst the convoy of new GBRf locos brought up from Newport Docks a few weeks ago, one quiet Sunday evening, where it was the 4th loco along the remarkable convoy of 6 at Masbrough station just a half mile south of this location. Here it is seen hauling the 6X73, Doncaster Down Decoy to Toton North Yard, rails freight, goods in old parlance, and is just about to pass under the now open lattice bridge, seen in the lower photograph from 1961 as boarded across so preventing a clear view, but with the ease of access to the line-side as evidenced in all these, and other pictures from the 'olden days', it hardly matters. The view looking north under the lattice footbridge can be seen on 16th November 1961 as Riddles 9F, 92158, comes along with an up freight heading for the 'Old Road', in what must have been coldish, damp conditions just about 5 weeks from Christmas 1961, as there is steam a-plenty. The works and line-side industries and complete lack of vegetation are again evident in this picture and all features are very prominent at the line-side, including the day's 'high speed data communication' network, the ever present line-side telegraph poles carrying a host of single copper cables each carrying a single telephony circuit of a few kilo-hertz(bits); to be compared with modern fibre-optic high-speed broadband which can attain 100,000 kilo-hertz(bits). A slide of this loco, taken in 1960 at St. Albans, was sold on Ebay recently for UKP8.99...

I chose this example because of a couple of minor livery variations. It carried it's pre TOPS number on this side and at this end there was the faded remains of a sticker between the marker lights.

This is the last in the present 'Then & Now' series which has so far featured pictures from Ickles in Rotherham, the now dismantled Firbeck Junction on the South Yorkshire Joint Railway (SYJR) and here, a move to the North Midland, north of Rotherham at Northfield or Thornhill. This series represents another set in a long-term photo-essay on documenting the changes in scene which have taken place in this area and where and as far as possible, always highlighting the view over the current scene with interesting traction to compare with 'past glories'. The return passage of the Washwood Heath 'Railvac', which went up to York earlier on, see Arfadint's picture of this at Treeton-

on the down journey to York Leeman Road, resulted in a foray out to complete this set of 'Then & Now' pictures using 'Then' material from 1961, 54 years ago, and along with the much different type of traction, the pictures illustrate the change in fortunes of the surrounding area which, for me, is as equally significant. The first picture shows the arrival of the longish train, a bit of a surprise, with leading class 56, 56312 in charge, a named locomotive, 'Jeremiah Dixon ' hauling a long rake of MBA type wagons with the RailVac unit in the middle and DCR (Devon & Cornwall Railway) 56303 bringing up the rear. Some background information on Jeremiah Dixon-

Jeremiah Dixon served as assistant to Charles Mason in 1761 when the Royal Society selected Mason to observe the transit of Venus from Sumatra. However, their passage to Sumatra was delayed, and they landed instead at the Cape of Good Hope where the transit was observed on June 6, 1761. Dixon returned to the Cape once again with Nevil Maskelyne's (5th Astronomer Royal, noted for his work on determining longitude at sea) clock to work on experiments with gravity. Since Maskelyne's observations and calculations were made at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, the Greenwich meridian became the reference for measurements of longitude in the British Navy, and was adopted internationally as the Prime Meridian in 1884.

The lattice footbridge is featured in these wide-angle shots and the difference between what is extant now and in 1961 can be seen by comparing it to the 'Then picture, taken in November 1961, shows the bridge had solid panels which have been replaced by wire netting with convenient apertures cut out to poke a lens through! It is clear the scene beyond the passing Diesel, D32, latterly class 45, 45126, hauling an up freight towards Masbrough north junction on the 5M28 working, has changed beyond recognition and this will be seen further in the following photographs. The 56 TnT'd Railvac is on the 6Z34 York Leeman Road Sidings to Washwood Heath Met. Cammel working.

On Dewsbury Midland hence the poorer light. Driver is a Noch HO truck driver. The Heljan blue is regarded as to dark and even after my attempts at lightening some areas its very obvious when compared to my 45006 in the same lighting conditions.

The final shot in the present 3-part series of 'Then and Now' pieces shows the 6X74 GBRf 66754 hauled working, rounding the corner towards Masbrough north junction, Sheffield Power Box's S424 signal showing green with the junction divergence feather illuminated. Probably the only one of the 'Then' pictures which is an exact match to the location, the lower picture shows another of Riddles 9Fs clanking its way south and heading for the same junction, possibly to also pass down the freight line through platform 4 at Masbrough station; though here it is on the up passenger line. In some instances goods trains were sent along the passenger lines to wait at the semaphores at the south end of platform two, for the passage of a higher, faster, class goods on the freight line. This south bound freight, much steam evident again, and for the same reason as the one in the last picture, its the 16th of November 1961 again and the 9F looks to be hauling a very traditional set of box wagons; possibly fish. Look at the severity of those line-side fences! In similar fashion the the 9F in the last picture, a slide of this loco taken in 1968 at Shrewsbury was also sold on Ebay, this time for a paltry 99p!

45114/45126 arrive at Loughboro' on 1C28 SUN 16.58 Derby-St.Pancras on 11/5/86.

Passing south under the footbridge, the rear of the RailVac is brought up by DCR 56303 and is seen heading towards Sheffield Power Box signal S427 with the junction feather illuminated indicating the RailVac will take the left-hand divergence at the north junction and pass down the 'Old Road', the route the freight in the last picture was also taking... In contrast, here, a passenger service is heading north along the down passenger lines, the freight lines are over on the left and there is an additional road on the right; a great difference in the rail facilities are evident in this picture and explains why the formation in the present picture is so 'generous'. The picture from November 1961 is the 1N32 down express, being hauled by diesel D124, latterly class 45, 45131, built at Crewe works between 1960 and 1963 and was scrapped at Berry's in 1988. In the background in the 'Then' picture the Northfield Warehouse of Beatson & Clark Ltd. can be seen and, miraculously, it is still present in this area though the sign board is no longer visible from this location. Beatson and Clark are a leading UK glass packaging manufacturer which probably explains why they are still around and in this location...
