Southern Railway excursion Queen 4501 is running an excursion across southern Illinois to Mt. Vernon in June 1977.
Southern Railway 4501 is a steam locomotive built in 1911 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Southern Railway. The engine is a 2-8-2 Mikado type locomotive, and was the very first of that wheel arrangement the railroad owned. Currently owned by the Tennessee Valley Railway Museum.
Tomorrow the chase begins as I will follow and photo up to Radford, VA. It is seen here in Bristol. Expecting to have a fun day.

The hilltop on the other side of the valley shows the extent of the spoil dumped from local mining, both on the left and, even more so, on the right. Several million tons of colliery waste has completely changed the profile of the hilltop, whilst terraces of waste feature on the right, the output of Bedwas Colliery, which was in production from 1912/3 to 1985.
The habitation is Bedwas, a village virtually contiguous with Caerphilly off to the left of the photo. This is the valley of the Afon Rhymni / River Rhymney.
SOU #4501 & #3170 bring a Norfolk Southern excursion train past the N&W era CPL's at Schuleen near Marion, VA.
Southern 2-8-2 number 4501 leads NS train 062 near Sweetwater, Tennessee, passing an old barn advertising Chattanooga's "Rock City". The train is deadheading towards Bristol for weekend excursions hosted by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum as part of the 21st Century Steam excursion program.

Late in the afternoon on March 13, 2018, Southern 4501 performs the last series of run-bys on a Pete Lerro photo charter as it leads its vintage freight consist through Trion, GA. The bridge over the Chattooga River can be seen beyond the caboose.
Southern Railway 2-8-2 #4501 and SD40 #3170 leads NS train 062 across the Holston River in Bluff City, Tennessee. The train is deadheading from Chattanooga to Bristol for a weekend of 21st Century Steam excursions hosted by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum.
