I took pictures with Evan and Grace today, and I had SUCH a good time.

ALSO I'm trying out stitching and I'm SUPER pleased with the results. ANYWAY here's a little diddy of Evan in the woods.

Paris was smiling at me this morning during my morning walk through the city...

Location: Quai de Valmy, Paris 10ème (France)

Coordinates: Click on the coordinates to see the exact location on Google Maps:

48°52'54.4"N 2°22'08.0"E

Reason: A morning walk during my 844th overnight in Paris. I never know what the city of Paris has in mind for me and I like to be surprised. This morning I came along the Point Éphémère which is arts center on the Canal Saint-Martin with a spacious exhibition space, multifunctional concert hall and rehearsal studios. The exterior is richly decorated with street art. Including today this smiley. Artist is unknown to me but I like the positive vibe.

Remarkable: This location gave me inspiration for a self portrait earlier in history. Nine years ago!

The Pleiades or Seven Sisters (Messier 45 or M45), is an open star cluster containing middle-aged, hot B-type stars located in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest star clusters to Earth and is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky.

The distance to the Pleiades can be used as an important first step to calibrate the cosmic distance ladder.

More recent results using the Gaia satellite (September 2016), determine distances of 134 ±6 pc.

Dust that forms a faint reflection nebulosity around the brightest stars was thought at first to be left over from the formation of the cluster, but is now known to be an unrelated dust cloud in the interstellar medium, through which the stars are currently passing.

45.

Hello! It's been a while but my schedule is insanely busy and I had to visit No 45, which is like 15 mins cycling, many times to get a decent shot.

Hope you like it!

One of the most incredible natural sights I've seen is Sossusvlei. If you're visiting, you're probably (hopefully) spending two or three days to really take everything in. It's an area where sunrises and sunsets can be magical, and the skies are so dark you'll see the night sky the way it's meant to be seen.

Stranger #45 – Khaled

As I was on the lookout for strangers, I saw Khaled talking with friends of his on a bench. They looked like they were having fun so I thought I’d join in. I asked Khaled if I could take his picture.

Khaled is from Syria, he’s 20 years old and has been in France for 3 years now. When he arrived in France, he didn’t speak French, he didn’t know many people in France. Now he speaks French very well and he has made friends. Khaled wanted to go to medical school in order to become a doctor but his way to look at the world has changed since then. “12 years, that’s a long time to spend studying. Things can change so much in 12 years.” Khaled is a self entrepreneur. He delivers food with his scooter. In September, he will start studying computer science. Khaled asked me if I smoked, I told him I didn’t. “That’s good, you’re right not to,” he said as he lit his cigarette.

Thank you very much Khaled!

Merci beaucoup Khaled!

Dune 45 is a famous sand dune located in the Sossusvlei area of the Namib Desert of Namibia. It is one of the most popular dunes to climb in the Sossusvlei park.

The name comes from the fact that it is located at the 45th km mark after the entrance to the Sossusvlei park.

The Pleiades or Seven Sisters (Messier 45 or M45), is an open star cluster containing some hot middle-aged B-type stars located in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the closest star clusters to Earth and is the most visible to the naked eye in the night sky, excluding the Hyades, Alpha Persei, Coma Berenices and Lambda Orionis groups.

The distance to the Pleiades can be used as an important first step in calibrating the cosmic distance ladder.

More recent results, using the Gaia satellite (September 2016), put it at 134 ±6 pc.

After decades of investigation, there are still those who believe that the cirrus clouds in the Pleiades are the remnants of their formation. How true is this?

With an estimated age of 130 ± 20 Myr (Barrado y Navascués et al. 2004), M45 is not as young as previously thought.

The most massive members are: Alcyone, Electra, Atlas, Maia, Merope, Taygeta, Pleione and Celeno. Some of them are Be stars, however less than 8 solar masses. It should be noted, however, that some are binary and multiple systems, so the real masses of the individual components could be lower [A&A 425, L45-L48 (2004)].

The group contains mainly A and F class stars, therefore between about 1 and 2.5 solar masses. Of course, there are red dwarfs and substellar objects such as numerous brown dwarfs. Considering the estimated age, all stars with masses greater than 8 times that of the Sun have already exploded as supernovae millions of years ago.

Some of the brightest stars are now in the process of evolving into red giants, and some have already done so, as evidenced by some massive white dwarfs.

If we had observed the Pleiades a few million years ago, we would have seen a nice mix of white stars and red giants, as in some younger OCs.

Regardless, M45 could not have remnants of the original cloud since they usually only last a few million years before being blown away by the radiation pressure exerted by the more massive stars.

Those clouds, which many believe to be remnants of the original hydrogen cloud, are therefore cirrus clouds belonging to the larger Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC-1) that the cluster is now passing through. Cirrus clouds only scatter the light of nearby stars. That the cluster and the cloud are not related can be seen from their mutual, almost opposite, movements (Steven J. Gibson and Kenneth H. Nordsieck 2003 ApJ 589 362)

The Pleiades are moving towards the constellation of Orion and will resist for another 250 million years before they completely disintegrate under the effects of the tidal forces exerted by the Milky Way.
