V roce 2001 vyhrála tehdejší ČKD VAGONKA výběrové řízení na dodávku 16 motorových vozů pro Finské železnice (VR) s opcí na dalších 20 kusů. Výsledkem se stala řada Dm 12, konstrukčně odvozená od nám známých vozů 842. Byť nakonec k využití opce nedošlo, prokázala řada Dm 12 poměrně vysokou spolehlivost i v extrémních podmínkách, které ve Finsku panují především v zimních měsících. V současné době jsou motorové vozy nasazovány na pěti regionálních tratích v podstatě na celém území Finska. Nejjižnějším působištěm zůstává dlouhodobě trať Karjaa - Hanko. Zde byl dne 10. 9. 2013 zvěčněn také vůz 4411, jež byl zachycen spolu s loďmi kotvícími v přístavu Tammisaari.
