Woodpecker Wednesday and time for another home grown Acorn Woodpecker from Mt. Diablo. Turns out I don't have an many woodpeckers and I thought, and there will always be a Wednesday. So, stick with me and we'll see if we can stretch the collection.

By now, you should know all there is to know about this woodpecker. But here are a few other facts about this clown of the Melanerpes formicivorus family. The acorn woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus) is a medium-sized woodpecker, 21 cm (8.3 in) long, with an average weight of 85 g (3.0 oz).

The adult acorn woodpecker has a brownish-black head, back, wings and tail, white forehead, throat, belly and rump. The eyes are initially dark in fledglings, turning to white within a few months. There is a small part on the small of their backs where there are some greenish feathers. In most subspecies, adult males have a red cap starting at the forehead, whereas females have a black area between the forehead and the cap. The white neck, throat, and forehead patches are distinctive identifiers. When flying, they take a few flaps of their wings and drop a foot or so. White circles on their wings are visible when in flight. Acorn woodpeckers have a call that sounds almost like they are laughing. All you need to know that "laugh" or call. What's really run is when the Bullock's Oriole and the Acorn Woodpecker are active at the same time. Two of the loudest calls at the same nesting time, poor little house wren can't get a word in edgewise.

This is a pretty classic look at the rodeo saddle bronc event, even has the judge in the background. The object is of course for the rider to ride to the 8-second timer, and both the rider and horse make up the two-part score.

For those concerned about the animals, especially the roughstock animals (horses and bulls), they are as much a part of the sport as the cowboys and are considered animal athletes. As noted, the score is two-part: for the cowboy and for the animal. Statistics are kept and the top roughstock will go to the National Finals. It’s a big deal for the stock contractors if their animal contributes to the All-round cowboy winner. The top rated horse may even win a gold buckle for the contractor. So the animal athletes do win “prizes” and are recognized for their performances and remarkable skills.

All I can smell is something burning and all I can see is smoke. We are miles away, yet it seems like we are only a few miles away from the source.
