A very magic square by David M. Collison -- if you square the numbers, it still works. (Ignore the colored primes -- a red herring. 41 is the only number of interest.)

Like a lot of homeless people, Kevin is pretty resourceful and industrious. He constructed this sleeping platform in January from wood that he found in the area and plans to stay here until his Social Security comes through, which he hopes will be soon. The location ain't bad either. In front, he has a great view of the Carqueniz Strait, the body of water that runs between San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River. Behind, beyond some railroad tracks, is a regional park. He says the "railroad cops" tried to run him off but the parks people don't mind him being there. Social Security is not being entirely cooperative; they say he hasn't earned enough money to qualify. But he still thinks he'll convince them in the end, and then he's off to Port Townsend, Washington, where his brother lives. Kevin was welcoming and a fine host. He offered me some chips and salsa (he's got a storage bin under where he is sitting). He also showed me a photo of a sunset he took with his cellphone in which the cloud pattern looks like a dragon. His only complaint about the location is that noisy birds wake him up early in the morning. I myself might have an issue with a train coming by every twenty minutes or so, but that doesn't seem to disturb Kevin. I wish him luck.

Sorry for the thoughtless shot! And uploaded a day late to boot. Ouch.

Yesterday was very much a lazy day. DVDs, food, housework. Today is a little different in that I'll actually be leaving the house *gasp* Maybe I'll get something interesting to shoot.

Consolidated B-24D Liberator

US Army Air Corp

Rahmi M. Koç Museum

Istanbul 7/5/2015

The B-24D, named, Hadley's Harem, was Lt. Gilbert Hadley's personal airplane and the one he flew, with his CoPilot, Lt. James Lindsey, on the mission to destroy Hitler's oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania. As they approached their target they took two direct hits, killing his bombardier. Lt. Leon Storms, instantly, badly damaging his plane's nose section and number two engine, which caught on fire. They headed south towardsthe British airbase at Nicosia,Cyprus.

They did not make it and crashed off the coast of Antalya in Turkey. Neither Lt. Hadley, nor CoPilot Lt. Lindsey, emerged from the sinking wreckage. They were caught, trapped in their collapsed cockpit and drowned. Seven of the crew of ten escaped.

All crewmen who flew on the Ploesti mission received DFCs for flying the mission. Both pilots, Lt. Gilbert Hadley, Lt. James Rex Lindsey, and Bombardier Lt. Leon M. Storms, received their Distinguished Flying Crosses and Purple Hearts, posthumously, for their valor and sacrifice over Ploesti. August 1, 1943.

I'm fairly new to quilting, only about 2 1/2 years in. For this quilt challenge, I wanted to design something that was different from past quilts I have made --I wanted to step out of my comfort zone as a means to widen my skills base. I've always wanted to try diamonds, and so I made that my theme. I was intrigued by the idea of light areas growing into dark, and dark growing into light, and I didn't want my quilt to have a set pattern, rather I wanted it to be random. I now want to make this quilt in every color, I'm just so happy with the results.

My quilt is 62" x 86" in size and I used the following Kona Solids, from the purple family, for my monochromatic theme: orchid, mulberry, petunia, violet, magenta, pansy, crocus, and hibiscus. I bound the quilt by hand, and quilted it on my normal home machine. For the quilting, I used an invisible thread for the top, and basically stitched in the ditch making long diagonal double lines, along the entire length of the quilt.
