... a mist rising from the valley, after the rain, glowing with sunset light and across the field, shadows grow longer ...

This is not the first Great Horned Owl I've ever photographed - in fact, I've had the pleasure and good fortune a number of times. But this one just blew my socks off. I was walking down a park trail, and another walker coming up the trail saw my camera and said, oh, there's an owl just round the corner. I thought, cool. But I only went a few feet and there it was, full backside, and it was HUGE. I'm reminded and surprised how really big they are every time I see one. So my Sibley guide specs are length 22", wing span 44", wt. 3.1 lbs (1400g). 22" - that's almost 2 feet high. I'm more used to 9" burrowing owls weighing a few ounces. The "hulk" just took my breath away. So ... heart pounding, I rounded the corner hoping for the front side. Got it, though it had a terrible shadow right across the face from a tree limb. So I waited. I hoped the sun would move before the bird did. And eventually, it turned around so I went back to where I first saw it. Cool - no shadow, just BACKlighting! All in all, I got 35 minutes with it before it finally moved deeper into the evergreens out of the sun and out of sight. One more thing - I think this is the first Great Horned Owl I've ever photographed with its horns up. :-)
