I was lucky to get any photos of these crabs. They live in burrows which can be as deep as 5 feet and which are located in wet forests. As soon as they saw or felt any movement, they disappeared into their burrows. This was one of the larger crabs and just gave me a minute with a front view to take his picture before he disappeared. I read the crabs in this area have white claws, as this one does. Something different taken in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

BNSF 4126 east leading one of the 4 or 5 morning shooters that you could always count on catching on Cajon Pass in the morning 6 days per week. July 22, 2004.
This was shot from hill 582, or MP 58.2 on the Cajon Sub. There is now 2 mains through this spot and the track with the grey ballast up top is the former SP Palmdale-Colton cutoff track.
This was during the 'rainbow' era of BNSF where you could shoot just about anything on a train and it was rare to catch a solid consist of orange GEEZ. We didn't realize how good we had it back then.
