The most powerful units on the Conrail roster were the massive SD80MACs. Purchased in 1996, these units represented Conrail's first foray into AC traction. Dubbed "Cadillacs" by the crews, Conrail ordered 28 of them and eventually purchased EMD's pair of demonstrators for an even 30. Conrail was thrilled with their performance and appeared to be fully committed to AC traction. On the railroad's Boston Line through the Berkshire mountains, 2 of the 80MACs could do the work of 4 older GE C30-7As on the same train. In 1997, the railroad ordered another 50, but by that point the CSX and NS merger was more or less a done deal. CSX and NS wanted nothing to do with a 20 cylinder, 5,000 HP behemoth and would subsequently change their shares of the order to SD70MACs and SD70s. Thus the 30 Conrail units became the world's only SD80MACs. #4105 is seen here in its final months of Conrail ownership at Morrisville, PA, in February of 1999. It would soon be patched as NS #7203.
