I'm going to try for a picture a month at the shore....the closest one is Long Beach Island, 50 miles, or an hour's drive away.

If that doesn't work, it may turn into one a season, and this would be winter at the beach. Stay tuned!

With two feet of snow, minus 28 degree temperatures(minus 55 degree windchill),and 4 foot drifts, spring seems a long way away. Hope is in sight, Sunday brings temperatures near 40degrees and the possibility of rain...

During the heat of the day the owlets would take cover on the cooler ground. This owlet popped up on the side of the road as we were walking by. Stretching out by the owls would help cool them off when temperatures reached over 40degrees C. Sadly the forest, the owls lived in, was burned to the ground a month after I took this shot. From a distance, I watched a Whitetail disappear in these trees and thought I might get an image with the deer in it. No luck but still a nice scene.

Not too many January days up there are 40degrees and sunny. It's no coincidence that's when I'm there

The sun setting over Canberra, taken from Mt Ainsley. A heatwave has had a grip of South eastern Australia (while North Queensland is battered by Cyclone Yasi). Temperatures have been consistently at or above 40degrees Celcius.

This was also my first genuine attempt at taking a landscape with a zoom lens (my Nikon 55-200mm kit lens) - I have never really grasped taking landscapes with zoom lenses, however I pictured this type of shot in my head and tried to execute it!

Finally, my thoughts go out to all who are currently being affected by Cyclone Yasi in Northern QLD. The eye of the cyclone is predicted to pass through Cardwell in about 50 minutes (11pm QLD time). The cyclone is almost the size of North America, it's 50 times the size of Cyclone Tracy, and the radius of gale force winds is about 1000km. Doppler wind speeds have been recorded earlier today at 300km/h - Hurricane Katrina was clocked at 310km/h.

Pham Rang / Thap Cham, Vietnam

Tháp Chàm and Pham Rang district has become a centre for the maintenance of Cham culture. Much of the district is occupied by Cham people where they have rice paddies, orchards of grapes and peaches, flocks of goats and Brahman cattle. Their towers (the 'Thap') are beautiful memorials to their kings and queens. There are several Cham sites with dilapidated towers along the central coast of Vietnam and major sites in Mỹ Sơn and Nha Trang.

However, there are two sites in the Tháp Chàm - Phan Rang district being maintained and culturally active. Two kilometers west of the Tháp Chàm Railway Station, there is excellent hilltop Cham tower complex dedicated to the king Po Klong Garai, the last reigning king; his likeness is depicted on a lingam in the sanctuary of the central tower. A second tower for the king Po Re Do is located about 20 km south west of Tháp Chàm, via Phu Quy to Phouc Hou and the village Hau Sanh; this tower is undergoing extensive renovation (July 2012).

The towers are currently used for the very colorful Cham festivals, particularly "Kate" in October (Oct 15 in 2012) when they still sacrifice a bullock and other food offerings. Other ceremonies for Ramadan, a Rain Festival (as required), weddings and other celebrations are also held. Apart from the incorporation of Islam into their cultural and religious

practice, another point of cultural difference is that their heredity line is maternal. The animist foundation of Cham culture, with fire motif on the towers, rustic traditions and very colorful ceremonial dress makes the Cham culture an ideal tourist resource for Vietnam, as yet poorly developed.

Architecturally, the towers are intricately built in small red bricks, almost dry stone construction with very fine mortar lines. The towers are topped by calyx like minarets, arches are rimmed by special bricks fired with tongue like extensions on the extremities to represent flames; it is very intricate brick work requiring sophisticated engineering to deal with the overhang.

Associated with the Po Klong Garai complex there is a cultural centre, more functionally built with concrete, bricks, mortar and render, but at least with some of the line of the Cham architecture and housing a display of cultural and handi-works, and excellent photographs and paintings by Cham artists.

News flash. It's not really working. It was 40degrees C at my home today (104 F). Not so pleasant.

downtown toronto, ontario

Shot using a small canon point and shoot (sd550)

to showcase what POOR AIR QUALITY INDEX means.

The air wasn't moving... the trees were

parked, the lake completely still and just plain HOT

with a high of 40degrees (with humidex reading)

And it's not even summer. I had to document this moment.

Very little post treatments:

. slight white balance adjustments from source setting.

. edgesoft focus + lens correction + vignetting (center is 100% in focus)

. slight curve tweaks to bring downtown out of smog.

. noise kept in showing how little detail was recorded by sensor

Also a hello and thanks for stopping by to those visiting from Torontoist (05/31/06).

In response to a query sent to me directly,

Toronto normally looks like this from Humber Bay by day

and by night year round.

Thanks.

Jason left his shorts on the bed..... So when i walked into the room to make the bed, i found Champaz asleep on his daddy's shorts.....So i went and grabbed the camera, and here is my boy doing what he does best "sleeping" lol..... He's gotten all of his 2nd layer and i think one more to go before it's all back to how it was (thank god for that)..... I took this capture on Monday, when it was still in the 40+ Degree heat.... cheers Michelle xxxxxxx...

This is how it goes in the sunshine state - one day it's 85 and then a day like today down to the 40s. But even 40degrees is still considerably moderate for some of you guys out there. I tell you one thing, living in Florida for a few years you certainly lose your tolerance to the cold.

Warm Wednesday to you all.

Hard to imagine now with cold grey skies over England, but back in August , temperatures were exceeding 40degrees in parts of Europe. This is the interior of a restaurant in Budapest where the shade was very welcome.

Because even though this has been *my* 365, YOU have been a big part of it. You know who you are.... the ones out there that have watched me, encouraged me, shot with me, inspired me... all of you. I'm gonna try to get through all of this without crying... not that you'd know... lol. no water on the screen... i've rewritten this about three times now... I just have so much i want to say to all of the people who have made this an amazing year for me. For my girlie shooters and our road trips, the many people I've met during this years' outtings... I just don't know how to make it simple... b/c you know Mike is almost done reading my words by this point ;)

That said... I started this 365 for reasons unknown. I had done 30 secrets and 52 weeks, and I was looking for something to move me forward. I was inspired by Chris Hardy a.k.a. CH and Carol a.k.a. Churchy .... they had both done a remarkable job of daily shots that felt meaningful to me on the whole. I figured if they can do it, why can't I ???? LOL.

And so the year began. I had the idea that I would begin and end my year in Northern Michigan b/c it's the place I begin and end every calendar year. I took my first shot there and I knew I would end my 365 with a family photo.... b/c that's how I end every single year. But here's what is so funny about a 365.... it can change you. Maybe not radically so.... but enough that you don't end in the place you thought you'd be in your mind. That is what happened to me.... I changed and grew and found... myself... and others... and ideas... and ... and had the best year ever. And so while I'm getting ready to take my family photo shortly.... it's *this* that defines and describes my year.

For the Rogue Players......... Thirteen things about myself:

1. I like a good meatloaf but rarely order it when eating out. I order catfish instead.

2. I can't stand to pay a hundred bucks for athletic shoes, but I will pay $100 for shearling house shoes.

3. I'm allergic to shrimp and crawfish. I wasn't always, but I am now.

4. I buy all of my cameras and lenses used. The last new camera I purchased was a Minolta point and shoot in 1988.

5. When I left Louisiana in 1987, I swore I would never come back.

6. I climbed Mt. Fuji and swam in the Marianas Trench.

7. I'm an Honorable Shellback.

8. I teach effective self defense.

9. Most people do not recognize me without scrubs on.

10. I'll eat almost anything. I've consumed balut, fugu, and goanna. Cat, rat, racoon, opossum, beaver and dog has also passed down my gullet.

11. When I'm forced to stop at train crossings, I blow my horn at the train.

12. I want to be more like my Golden Retriever.

13. I'm not in this photograph.

Like some merciless, sadistic prankster, our sun spills over a gap in the Alaska range this morning providing some welcome light, but nothing in the way of warmth on this Winter Solstice.

Winter break - a bleak cold and gripping cold.

It was my niece's wedding. It was incredibly hot and humid. We were hiding in the shade so as not to get sunstroke. The wedding was beautiful, however.

It was 40 degrees Celsius in Melbourne today, and I wanted nothing more than to come home, and jump in the pool! Then I thought about how much worse it was in the heat in the days before air conditioning.

I gave this photo a vintage feel to try to make it feel as if it was taken in those days when there was no air conditioning, and a cold pool was the most amazing thing in the world!

Every year The Brooklyn Polar Bear club does their first swim New Years Day. I have gone the year before and three years ago (and froze! lol) This year it was so warm, that mobs came out!

It was out of control this year! So many people and photographers...pushing and shoving to get a look and shot.

I almost got knocked down twice, and hit with those BIG lenes! lol I made two mistakes, in my hurry to get to water and shoot, I forgot to take my camera out of manual, and the tide came in and soaked me! lol

These are just cropped and cleaned up, maybe when I have some time I will go back and play in photoshop..a lot were no good, because I was in manual and shooting in bright light, just clicking away!

These are in order as they happened. A lot of brave souls! Not quite sure what happened here, when I looked tonight only 18 of the 36 in set were public..?? Now, all are seeable. Thanks for looking.

I hope everyone had a great New Years!
