Messier 49 was discovered by Charles Messier in 1777. This elliptical galaxy is located about 56 million light-years from Earth in the constellation of Virgo. As this galaxy is emitting X-ray emissions, a supermassive black hole at the center is likely. The galaxy is part of a larger cluster, the Virgo Cluster, centered on M87.

The spiral galaxy on the left is NGC 4535, located 54 million light-years from Earth. Other galaxies on this image are NGC 4526, 4519, 4518, 4488, 4469, 4470, 4492, 4466, PGC 41726n 41586, 41258, 40861, 41036.

Porthmadog Harbour railway station, the terminus of both the Ffestiniog Railway and Welsh Highland Railway, Porthmadog, Gwynedd, North Wales.

The Station is the head office and operational headquarters of the Festiniog Railway Company, marketed as Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways.

The station is built at the western end of the Cob, the great embankment across the Traeth Mawr, on a peninsula from Ynys Madoc constructed in 1842 to form a slate wharf and a harbour wall. It was opened for passenger service on 6 January 1865. Welsh Highland Railway trains served the station from 1923, but these ceased running in 1936.

The station was closed to passengers on 15 September 1939, although slate trains continued operating through the Second World War until 1946. The buildings continued in use as the principal offices of the Festiniog Railway Company and the home of Manager (Mr Robert Evans) including throughout the years of almost total closure from 1 August 1946 to 24 September 1954. The station reopened for passengers on 23 July 1955. Welsh Highland Railway services were restored in 2011.

The present stone buildings, replacing earlier wooden buildings dismantled and reused elsewhere on the railway, date from 1878/79 and the goods shed was added in 1880. They were linked to the former goods shed by way of a major extension in 1975. Passenger facilities include a booking and enquiry office, a large tourist and hobby shop and a large cafeteria with licensed bar. The erection of the platform awning was completed in 1988.

With the resumption of services in 1955, all traffic on the line has been controlled from an office in Harbour station, known simply as "Control". Except for some early morning and late-night movements by works trains, this office is manned constantly when passenger-carrying services are in operation. Its remit was expanded in 1997 with the commencement of public services on the Welsh Highland Railway between Caernarfon and Dinas and its subsequent expansion south towards Porthmadog.

I went scouting for Rust this morning as that is November's color. Expect a lot of rust-colored images over the next thirty days, my Flickr friends! Even though the other three images ~ see in the comment box below ~ include some October Grey, I'm going with this glittery Jack O'Lantern! I have a feeling that this decoration will soon disappear into storage! I can go back and capture the others later in the month! ;D

The West Kennet Long Barrow is a Neolithic tomb or barrow, situated on a prominent chalk ridge, near Silbury Hill, one-and-a-half miles south of Avebury in Wiltshire.

Archaeologists classify it as a chambered long barrow and one of the Severn-Cotswold tombs. It has two pairs of opposing transept chambers and a single terminal chamber used for burial. The stone burial chambers are located at one end of one of the longest barrows in Britain at 100 m in total it is estimated that 15,700 manhours were expended in its construction. The entrance consists of a concave forecourt with a facade made from large slabs of sarsen stones which were placed to seal entry.

The construction of the West Kennet Long Barrow commenced about 3600 BC, which is some 400 years before the first stage of Stonehenge, and it was in use until around 2500 BC. (from wikipedia.org)

Baldwin Locomotive Works 2-6-2 #40861 greets visitors to the Manatee Heritage Village in Bradenton FL. Its original operator, Manatee Crate Company, supplied wooden crates to local citrus farmers, who made heavy use of the Florida railroads to get their perishable produce to markets. Cardboard replaced wooden crates post-World War II, and ultimately skyrocketing real estate prices prompted the citrus farmers to sell up. A vanished world indeed...

These two photos show a 2-6-2 Wood Burning Steam Locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It's called "Old Cabbage Head" because of the spherically shaped Smoke Stack, which was designed to catch the glowing embers from burning wood in order to prevent setting brush on fire along the Railroad Right of Way. The 2-6-2 Wheel Arrangement has the Whyte Notation: Prairie.

It was built by Baldwin in 1913 for the Taylor County Lumber Company in Northern Florida. In 1948, it was sold to the Noccatee Crate Mill Company in Manatee County. When Noccatee Crate Mill Company closed in 1952, the locomotive was purchased by local residents for preservation. It was placed on display with the Tender lettered "Welcome To Manatee County" to greet visitors. In 2002, it was cosmetically restored and moved to the Manatee Village Historical Park.

Manatee Village Historical Park is located at 1404 Manatee Ave, East (State Road 64), Bradenton, Florida 34208. Further information can be found at:

I took these photos with my Minolta Maxxim 5000 35mm SLR Film Camera on January 2, 2002 with Color Slide Film. I Scanned the Slide to create the Electronic Image presented here on the flickr™ site, using Photo Shop™ to improved the Exposure and Sharpness.

DISCLAIMER: I took these slides in the early 2000's, while I was just learning Photography, and therefore it was very poor in Exposure, Composition and Sharpness. I spent quite some time trying to optimize it with Photoshop™. Unfortunately, the Electronic Image that I posted here, on flickr™, was the best I could do with the poor slide that I took in 2002.
