On the last day of this train running with a post-7PM sunset for the year, I decided to try my luck and pray that this train would somehow make it out before sunset. FPCH used to pretty consistently make it onto the Hell Gate by 6:30pm year round but as the year’s have gone by they only seem to depart later and later, only making it to the bridge a handful of times in lighting. With this in mind I decided to try a spot I had been eyeing for a long time, much closer to FPD (Fresh Pond Yard) for a chance at maybe getting them in light. One gate, hole-in-the-fence, and a couple hours of waiting later, Providence & Worcester C40-8 #4053 leads FPCH along the Freemont Secondary at almost 7PM exactly, a good way to end the FPCH season until 2026.
Five Chessie cats drift past the Conrail station in Silver Springs, NY on July 18, 1986. The Chessie road trains would stop up on the hill and come down and work the salt plant in Silver Springs in the final days of the BR&P 4th Sub. This work used to be done by the Leroy Switcher, which had been abolished. There were only a couple days left before the Borg took over the line. This was the next to last RS-97.
RS-97 heads past the wrecked G&W 61 at P&L Jct. in Caledonia, NY on July 14, 1986. Some kids had let a cut of cars loose up in Leroy and the cars rolled at great speed all the way to P&L Jct. The salt train power was stopped on the main at P&L Jct., with the 61 being the trailing unit. Good thing that the crew was in the lead unit at the other end of the power consist or they might have been crushed by the impact.
