Vermont Railway's DASW (Bellows Falls switcher) is breaking up the inbound train 263 which just arrived from Rutland with 30 cars. Having coupled to the south end of the train they are making multiple pulls out over the long causeway just as the sun begins to break through on this day that had heretofore been overcast and gloomy.
The classic Rutland / Green Mountain Railroad colors of green and gold glow on this glorious autumn scene looking down on the long causeway that stretches out along the west bank of the Connecticut River here at about MP B1.7 on modern day VRS' Falls Running Track of the Bellows Falls Subdivision which is the original Rutland Railway Green Mountain mainline. RS1 number 405 was built for the Rutland in November 1951 and is approaching her 71st birthday having never left the rails for which she was built to run!
This would be her last day in freight service, presumably for the year (hopefully not forever!) as she suffered an unknown mechanical failure and was due to be withdrawn for her federally mandated part 229 inspection the following week anyway. This was THE one shot I wanted of her and after failing on two prior attempts in the 11th hour the train gods shined their light on me with this timeless fall tableau of New England railroading.
My only complaint is that none of my friends were here to see this. This was too beautiful a moment for one man and one camera, and it was meant to be shared. I alone could not do the scene justice...but here is my attempt.

F40PH #405 heads Westbound with the Pioneer past the rock formations near Dale, WY. in October of 1992.
The Pioneer ran over Sherman Hill from June 17th, 1991 until May 10th, 1997.
DL #405 & #2045 lead another OCS, one week prior to the last one, seen here coming around the curve at Myrtle Street.
As many opine for the days when the Bozeman Local ran like clockwork and with clean power, no doubt people such as Mark Hemphill yearn for when the MRL #405 plied the rails as DRGW #3047. Although the tonnage on this day won't make a dent in the speed, even with a 1.9% grade ahead, the #405 undoubtedly saw mountain territory in its previous life. The #3047 was one of 22 GP35's delivered to the DRGW between 1964/65. Like most of the GP35 fleet, it lasted just about 28 years, being retired in Dec 1993 along with 17 others. An interesting note is that all 22 GP35's were made to be trailing unit only in 1972, removing cab seats, toilets and radios. I am unsure if this lasted until their retirement or if they were made lead qualified again at some point. Thanks to utahrails.net for the great details! Its an interesting note that by now the #405 has spent close to or more time on the Montana Rail Link than it did the Denver and Rio Grande Western. Time marches on!
IC 405 - Flaming Star nebula.
Rippling dust and gas lanes give the Flaming Star Nebula its name. The red and blue colors of the nebula are present in different regions and are created by different processes. The bright star AE Aurigae is so hot it is blue, emitting light so energetic it knocks electrons away from surrounding gas. When a proton recaptures an electron, red light is frequently emitted. The blue region's color is a mix of this red light and blue light emitted by AE Aurigae but reflected to us by surrounding dust. The two regions are referred to as emission nebula and reflection nebula, respectively. The Flaming Star Nebula, officially known as IC 405, lies about 1500 light years distant, spans about 5 light years, and is visible with a small telescope toward the constellation of Auriga. GMRC 405 crosses the diamonds at Bellows Falls, VT. The old Alco RS-1 is filling in as the DASW switcher while the regular loco is being serviced.

HT19 SK70BVB seen at east of Croydon Flyover working on route 405 towards Redhill.
With the 202's HTs entered service since day 1 of Arriva's takeover, the 405 soon followed with its batch of its HTs, several of which entered service today. (30/9/20)
Some of the batch had their registrations changed recently, such as HT19 SK70BVE reregistered to SK70BVB (plate initially held by HT16)
