Actual US military serial 44-73566.

Despite being delivered to the UK in 1945, this Mustang didn't see any active service and instead returned to the US. It remained in USAF serivce with various Air National Guard units until demobbed in 1958. After a period of civil operation, it was reworked by Cavalier Aircraft and in 1968 it joined the Fuerza Aerea Salvadoreña (El Salvador Air Force) who operated it as '406' until 1974.

With a rather empty looking M6 Motorway as a backdrop, Class 40 40196 was running light engine Southbound between Lancaster and Preston at Brock on July 28th 1977. The loco was amongst the last batch of English Electric Type 4's built, emerging from Vulcan Foundry as D396 in July 1962 and going to its first home at Gateshead (52A). It was renumbered to 40196 in February 1974 and lasted in service for almost 22 years, before being withdrawn in May 1984. 40196 was scrapped at Doncaster Works in January 1985.

Healey Mills allocated 40196 heads away westward from Wakefield Kirkgate light engine, 22nd July 1976.

Locomotive History

40196 was built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry as D396. It entered traffic in April 1962 and was allocated to Gateshead for trans-pennine and secondary East Coast Main Line duties. It was transferred to York in 1966 and then on to Healey Mills in January 1967 where it would spend the next twelve years. In April 1979 it transferred to Thornaby and moved to Gateshead a year later before returning to Healey mills in October 1980. Towards the end of its career in May 1983 it was transferred to Longsight from where it was withdrawn in May 1984 and was broken up at Doncaster Works during January 1985.

Some Facts About Indian Railways WDP4D Locomotive -

Now Some Info on EMDGT46PAC : -

Variants -

There are three variants of this loco - the original WDP-4 which is a 4,000 hp (2,980 kW) loco, the WDP-4B which is a 4,500 hp (3,360 kW)126 t (124 long tons; 139 short tons) weighted loco with a single cab and the newest WDP-4D which is a 4,500 hp (3,360 kW) loco with dual cabs.

Performance -

The WDP-4 is capable of hauling 24 coach trains at 110–130 km/hour. It has also been used for speed trials where it has hauled 9 coach trains at 180 km/hour with recent trials done with Renfe Talgo coaches where it was tested at 195Kmph.

The locomotives can be used in either direction, and frequently haul trains long hood forward, as in the picture. Newer editions with 4500 hp have been produced which have been named with the sub class WDP-4B /WDP-4D which have different traction control with six traction motors and are Co-Co bogie equipped (more similar to WDG-4), unlike the original which has a Bo-1-1-Bo arrangement with four traction motors. Due to some controversies regarding visibility hindrances faced by loco pilots in driving long hood front, the basic WDP-4B model has been modified to dual cab to eliminate any such possibility. Other features of WDP-4B and WDP-4D are same. The cabs have a slightly wider profiles, to improve visibility.

Some of the WDP-4B/WDP-4D are spotted having provision for an inverter-driven head-end power unit, allowing running trains without a generating car (EOG) for hotel power.

The loco is very fuel efficient and has minimal exhaust emissions unlike ALCO based locomotives, thanks to its 2 stroke high efficiency diesel engine. It is characterized by its loud horn, which can be heard for large distances around, and aircraft-like sound of its running engine.

This is Cudworth on a July afternoon in 1982, and Class 40 no. 40196 speeds south through the site of the former station with a mixed freight. My vantage point for this photograph is the northern end of the former platform 1, which was the only one of Cudworth's platforms still in situ at this time, though in much depleted condition. The missing arm on the nearest semaphore would have controlled access onto the former Midland branch to Barnsley via Cudworth West Junction.

he date I was give for this image in Grantham was June 1962 but as D396 only went into service at Gateshead in July I suspect it was was around then.

The class 40 i I think heading in the up direction and is about to be passed by V2 60854 which was withdrawn in June 1963 so it can't be later than that.

The loco was new to Gateshead in July 1962 and I have a feeling it may have been an Eastern Loco all of its life and may have been Healey Mills based at this time. That said I lost track of what happened to some of the 40's in their last few years of operation so it could have been a Midland loco at this time. It was withdrawn in May 1984 and cut up at Doncaster the following year.

The Rochdale Canal in Mytholmroyd, Calderdale, West Yorkshire.

The Rochdale is a broad canal because its locks are wide enough to allow vessels of 14 feet width. The canal runs for 32 miles across the Pennines from the Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield Basin in Manchester to join the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire.

The Rochdale Canal was conceived in 1776, when a group of 48 men from Rochdale raised £237 and commissioned James Brindley to conduct a survey of possible routes between Sowerby Bridge and Manchester.

The promoters, unsure as to whether to build a wide or a narrow canal, postponed the decision until an Act of Parliament had been obtained. The first two attempts to obtain an act failed after being opposed by mill owners, concerned about water supply. The promoters, to understand the mill owners' position, asked William Jessop to survey the parts of the proposed canal that were causing most concern. Jessop gave evidence to the Parliamentary committee, and in 1794 an act was obtained which created the Rochdale Canal Company and its construction. Rennie's estimated cost in the second bill was £291,000, and the company was empowered to raise the money by issuing shares, with powers to raise a further £100,000 if required.

When an Act of Parliament was sought in 1965, to authorise the abandonment of the canal, the Inland Waterways Association petitioned against it, and when it was finally passed, it contained a clause that ensured the owners would maintain it until the adjacent Ashton Canal was abandoned. Discussion of the relative merits of restoring the canal or the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in 1973 led the formation of societies to promote both schemes in 1974.

The Rochdale Canal Society wanted to see the canal fully re-opened, as part of a proposed Pennine Park. They worked hard both to protect the line of the canal and to begin the process of refurbishing it. A new organisational structure was created in 1984, with the formation of the Rochdale Canal Trust.

In 1997, the Rochdale Canal Trust was restructured, in response to announcements that there might be large grants available as part of the millennium celebrations. The canal was still at this point owned by a private company, and the Millennium Commission would not make grants to a scheme which was for private profit, rather than public benefit. The restructuring would allow the Trust to take over responsibility for the canal. However, the plan was rejected by the Commission, and to access the grant of £11.3 million, the Waterways Trust took over ownership of the canal.
