I think the headcode is 7M86, which could mean this may be a freight that originated at Severn Tunnel Junction, anyway Class 40 D333 is in charge at Winwick Junction on the 10th of July 1970.

Having seen Sir Nigel Gresley at Selside we stopped for a look around Horton station and were rewarded by two freight workings in quick succession

The signal box was still in use and signal identified that a southbound train was due.

The working is identifiable but would appreciate the details I have an idea they were tanks to Corkickle from Ince or St Helens

The 40 should be identifiable by the damaged glass on the indicator on the left

Guide Bridge was once a mecca for all sorts of motive power in the BR era post steam. The EM1 and EM2 locos used to rattle through on passenger turns but by the date of this photo the EM2 locos were out of service and the regular passenger services were withdrawn over the Woodhead route. However, there was still plenty of freight haulage, the occasional diversion and also the occasional rail tour. These could be EM1 hauled as well as other locos like the Class 44 Peaks.

Here it is another busy day with 40133 coming off the stabling point. These fine machines were still in abundance in this area and delving into the archives I find it much easier to improve these images than colour ones!

In case anyone is interested I still have that camera bag that is on the floor even though it is a little worse for wear now and is housebound with items inside it.

Retirement of sorts after so many rail outings.

Locomotive History

40133 was originally D333 and was built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry. It is one of twenty Class 40 locomotives to feature the “intermediate” design of nose end, still retaining the gangway doors but fitted with “split” headcode boxes in lieu of discs. This design of nose end was fitted to D325 – D344 and closely resembles the design of the nose end fitted to the first one hundred and eighteen Class 37’s also built by English Electric. Interestingly this design of nose end was superseded on the Class 40 by the final style without gangway doors and fitted with a central 4 character headcode box in 1961 but continued to be fitted to the Class 37’s until D6819 was released into traffic in March 1963. D333 entered traffic in February 1961 allocated to Crewe North MPD. It would spend its entire career allocated to depots in the North West predominantly at Wigan Springs Branch or Longsight. It was withdrawn in January 1984 and broken up only two months later during March 1984 at Doncaster Works.

The 26th of February 1961 and Class 40 D333 is on the down 1S57 Royal Scot with load 13 near Euxton Junction.

I have the 40 as only being released to traffic at Crewe on February 22nd so being 4 days old as such accounts for the near pristine condition. Having spent all her life allocated within 50 miles of Crewe the loco survived until January 1984 and was cut up at Doncaster two months later.

Class 40 Indian Summer - Pennines

Seen in the great 'Indian Summer' of 1984, 40135 was the second Class 40 to Scarborough on summer Saturday 21st July 1984, following on the heels of equally mighty 40013 'Andania' :) Although flagging the second chance of a 40 to Scarborough in the hope of something rarer, we were to end up takin 40135 on the return working 1M79 from Leeds to Liverpool.

Split Box 40s 40125 - 40144 only these 20 Class 40s were built with the two split head code boxes either side of the connecting doors. Only five of them survived into 1984, with infamous 'Great Train Robbery' 40126 succumbing in Feb 84 following on the heels of 40133 in Jan 84. This just left 40129 which was withdrawn in May 84, and then all the way through to the end in Jan 85 were survivors 40135 (since preserved) and 40143 which was scrapped at Crewe Works.

'A day in the life' - log book update:

Saturday 21st July1984 - 40135 on 1Exx Liverpool - Scarborough.

Between 1982 and 1984 I spent many happy hours with my friends chasing around the North of England after the remaining Class 40s. At the beginning of 1984, there were still 50 members of the fleet in service, but this had already reduced down to 33 by the time I photographed 40135 towards the end of July. Two more fine locos 40001 & 40057 were withdrawn the very next day (22 Jul). By the end of the summer timetable, just 25 remained in service, and only 17 of the class survived into 1985, all but 3 being withdrawn over the weekend of 21st/22nd Jan 1985.

D200/40122, 40118 and 40012 were kept on just for rail tours, although D200 had a second Indian summer :)

My interest in the railways waned permanently around 1990-91 with the demise of the Class 50s, initially from the Paddington-Oxford route in 1990, and finally when they retired from the Waterloo-Exeter services in 1992.

As well as enjoying the thrash, I managed to record many of the trips and railway scenes encountered on film for posterity. Those days are now long gone, but happily the photos remain for me to reminisce over and share. ;)

Class 40 Indian Summer - Pennines

Seen in the great 'Indian Summer' of 1984, 40135 was the second Class 40 to go over the Pennines on summer Saturday 21st July 1984, following on the heels of equally mighty 40013 'Andania' :) Although flagging the second chance of a Class 40 to Scarborough in the hope of something rarer turning up at York, I ended up taking 40135 on the return working 1M79 from Leeds to Liverpool. I took a quick photo opportunity as we stopped at Stalybridge, after crossing the Pennines - probably a driver change here?

A smart looking well preserved long-life Class 104 B.R.C.&W. DMU rests between duties in the bay platform - Buxton unit BX481. The evening sunshine plays on the nose of the EE Type 4, and highlights the missing horn grille - these were made of solid brass and became quite collectable in the Class 40's later years (I have one from pilot batch loco 40004 :)) The 'young lad' clad in denim is the youthful Schwartz751119 who was also taking the photo opportunity!

Now LIVE on Sound & Vision on SoundCloud - more memories from a mis-spent youth 😎

During the 1980s, whilst travelling around the British Rail network, I made a number of tape recordings to capture the railway scene of the time, many from the front window, some from the platform, using my trusty ghetto-blaster - and now these recordings can finally be heard :)

The damage to the BR emblem on the cab may help to identify this loco.

The signal box was still in use as can be seen by the fact that the semaphore arm has been returned to danger.

A second photo on this day taken at Horton has identified a query with this date as the said loco 40133 is recorded as being in Crewe Works. I may therefore need to amend the date as and when a definite date is proved.
