This is National Tree Week here in Ireland {5th of March onwards} where we celebrate

our trees. We havent got many but thankfully since 2000 they have started planting more of our native hardwood species and less of those horrid Norway Spruce that block out light from the forest floor and prevent all the wonderful undergrowth, fungii and wild flowers from growing. Of course they are a commercial crop and vital for the economy. Indeed, Coilte, the forestry people here do great work as they allow access through there land and plantations to access the trails and mountain tracks which I love so much.

I dont think theres is anything more wonderful than Oak trees.

This tree which is an Irish Oak [Quercus Petraea] is reckoned to be over 400 years old and is growing in the Powerscourt Valley, near the waterfall here in Co. Wicklow. The ground and the humidity seems to suit them better than the more common English Oak [Quercus Robur] which are also magnificent trees.

I would really love to see more of your tree photos here on Flickr as the truly are such beautiful things.

Do hope you like it! Catch up with you later,

The number of oriental white storks has increased recently. One of them happened to fly all the way from Hyo - go to our town UEDA, NAGANO prefecture about three years ago .

In addition to that, it was the first time in my life that l came across the stork around my neighborhood.

Since then , she has visited and stayed here in UEDA many times .

By the way, it's said that there are more than 100ponds called TAMEIKE in UEDA , especially around the district of SHIODA DAIRA. TAMEIKE means the ponds built for agricultural uses, especially for rice farming . As we've had little precipitation since olden times, most of them had been built by the order of an local FUDAL Lord during the Edo Period about 400years ago .

Each pond has a variety kinds of surroundings with so many different kinds of living things .

Thus she seems to like our town very much , I think.

I took a wee wander last night around the beautiful Derry Walls. 2019 marks 400 years since the Walls were completed and the Siege of Derry took place. It's amazing these walls have stood the test of time. I wonder what they wouldve seen over the last 400 years. Too much blood spilled.

The House of the Binns, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland: Set in beautifully landscaped parkland overlooking the River Forth, this fascinating laird’s house near Linlithgow has been the home of the Dalyells for over 400 years. The Dalyells of the Binns have a long tradition of serving in the Royal Company of Archers, the Sovereign’s Bodyguard in Scotland. The present house was built in 1612 by Thomas Dalyell, an Edinburgh merchant who made his fortune at the court of King James VI and I in London. The estate is situated on two hills (bens from Gaelic) from which its name is derived. The house is set in 0.81 km2 of parkland, and approached by two drives: the current west drive, and main east drive that has been disused since 1913. The category "B" listed folly Binns Tower is situated at the highest point of the park, Binns Hill. It was designed by Alexander Allan in 1826, allegedly as the result of a wager placed with the then owner, Sir James Dalyell. On the west side of Binns Hill is a woodland garden with walks through it to the tower. Beneath the escarpment to the south-west of the Tower is General Tam's cave, supposedly used by him for meditation. Thomas’s son, General Tam Dalyell, formed the legendary regiment of Royal Scots Greys. There are many mementos of him in the house, as well as colourful legends about his dealings with the Devil to discover. www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/house-of-binns

The Dodda Aladha Mara or Doda Aladha Mara, literally translated to Big Banyan Tree, is a giant 400-year-old Banyan tree (Ficus bengalensis), located in the village of Kettohalli in the Bangalore Urban district of Karnataka, India. This single plant covers 3 acres (12,000 m2) and is one of the largest of its kind. In the 2000s, the main root of the tree succumbed to natural disease, and thus the tree now looks like many different trees.

Charminar means "Mosque of the Four Minarets", often called "The Arc de triomphe of the East".

It might not be as magnificent as a Taj Mahal or the Great Pyramids but definitely its no less than a Eiffel tower for a Hyderabadi.

I couldnt get a complete view with my 18mm and so too 3 pictures and stitched them together to get this :) Its a Vertorama and so is this unusual square shape.

Some interesting notes:

1. Charminar is a massive square structure, 56 m (183.72 ft) high and 30 m (98.42 ft) wide. This monument is built entirely of granite and lime mortar. It has 4 minarets one on each of its corners.

2. Legends has it that the emperor Quli Qutb Shah prayed for the end of plague and took the vow to build a masjid on that very place. He ordered the construction of the masjid which became popular as Charminar because of its four characteristic minarets

3. This mosque is the oldest surviving mosque in the city of Hyderabad.

4. The four grand arches of the Charminar face the four cardinal directions. Once upon a time each of these arches led to four royal roads. The historic Goa - Machilipatnam trade route passed through Charminar.

5. In its heyday, the Charminar market had some 14,000 shops.

6. The Charminar is an excellent example of the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. The four arched gates and the four towering minarets of this building reflect its Islamic lineage but the overall rendering of the building reflects a strong local influence. The decorations on the main structure and the minarets are ample evidence of local architectural traditions.

Tsuruga Castle (鶴ヶ城 Tsuruga-jo)

Aizuwakamatsu Castle (会津若松城, Aizuwakamatsu-jo), also known as Tsuruga Castle (鶴ヶ城 Tsuruga-jo) is a traditional castle in northern Japan, at the center of the town of Aizuwakamatsu, in Fukushima Prefecture.

It is sometimes simply called the White Crane castle and is situated in a gorgeous section of Japan. With nearby Mount Bandai and lake Inawashiro this area offers some breath taking scenery. The castle stands on a hill 3km. east of Aizu- Wakamatsu Station. It is surrounded by a thousand cherry trees, innumerable evergreens, a stone wall and moat. The white tower rising high in the blue sky provides a splendid view of the entire Aizu valley. The 5-story castle serves as a local history museum. The first floor contains materials pertaining to the Buddhist culture in the Aizu area and Aizu rulers'. The second floor holds famous antique lacquer ware and pottery. The third floor holds items connected with the Boshin War are located on the next two floors. The forth floor focuses on the famous Byakkotai pictures, the White Tiger Group, a group of loyal youths who met a tragic end during the war. The fifth floor functions as an observation platform. There is an interesting display of antiques in the long one-story wing Hashiri Nagaya, which extends from the southern end of the castle.

A one Ashina Naomori constructed the first building, in 1384. In ca. 1593, Gamou Ujisato finished building the rest of the castle and included name of Tsurugajo (White heron castle). The stone wall, also completed at that time, still remains to be the foundation of the entire castle area even 400 years later. During the end of the Edo Period, the Aizu soldiers were involved in the Boshin Civil War, which continued from the Toba Fushimi War. They were defeated after about one month of fighting to protect the castle. The new government destroyed the castle in 1874, (the 7th year of Meiji). Tsurugajo Castle was rebuilt in 1965 in accordance with its original design. It symbolizes the samurai culture in Aizu-Wakamatsu, the oldest town in Fukushima Prefecture.

Date Masamune, the greatest warlord of the Tohoku area, had struggled against the Ashina clan for years, and finally captured the castle in 1589. But soon he submitted to Toyotomi Hideyoshi and gave it up in 1590.

In 1592 a new lord, Gamo Ujisato, redesigned the castle and gave it the name Tsuruga Castle, although the populace also referred to it as Aizu Castle or Wakamatsu Castle.

During the Edo period, it was the seat of the daimyo of the Aizu Han. The founder was Hoshina Masayuki, the son of shogun Tokugawa Hidetada and the grandson of Ieyasu. He and his successors bore the Matsudaira name. The castle was an important Tokugawa stronghold in the Tohoku Region of Honshu.

Oriental white stork is designated and protected as one of the special national species in JAPAN. Toyo-oka City in Hyogo Prefecture has contributed to the protection of this bird for many years .Thanks to their efforts, the number of this bird has been increasing . About two years ago, one of them came all the way from there to my town, UEDA in NAGANO prefecture . It was the first time that l could see the Oriental stork in my neighborhood .It is more than 500km from here to Toyo - oka. What a long journey she had taken !Since then , she has visited here in UEDA many times .There are said to be more than 100 ponds called TAMEIKE in Japanese . TAMEIKE means an artificial pond used for agriculture, especially for rice farming . They were built by the order of a local FUDAL lord or DAIMYO during Edo period about 400years ago , because of little precipitation around here.

Now SHIODA district located in the western part of UEDA is famous for those ponds called SHIODA DAIRA TAMEIKE GUNN, which have many different kinds of surroundings and living things . Thus an oriental stork with the number of J0041 often visits and stays around the district of SHIODA Daira in search for variety kinds of food or its prey, I think .

My hometown, Penetanguishene, Ontario.

Trying to find only ONE image to show my hometown, that was not easy. I chose THE MEETING which is a sculpture by Timothy Schmalz of the Huron Chief Aenon and Samuel de Champlain to commemorate Champlain arriving 400 years ago in Penetang. The second thing that comes to mind is Ste Anne's Roman Catholic Church which, if you place yourself just in the right place, you see both. I am standing only feet from Georgian Bay (or Georgian Ice!!) Today was not the best day to shoot, as you can see, it was snowing out.

Close-up photograph of a Dutch commemorative postage stamp issued in 1975 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Leiden University, the oldest university in the Netherlands (founded in 1575).

The stamp has a face value of 45 cents and features a symbolic illustration of a human brain with a window opening to the sky, representing knowledge, science, and intellectual freedom.

This stamp was printed by Joh. Enschedé & Zonen and is part of the Netherlands’ academic and educational heritage.

Reputedly the oldest tree in the town. It was already present during the Civil War in England and was probably planted more than 400 years ago. Its girth is 35 ft.

One of the best murals I gave ever seen. Depicts the history of Quebec, Canada and Quebec City. It took a couple of seconds to realize that it was two dimensional - it was that well done.

When I first saw the Dewey Oak and it's sprawling branches which spread out over 130 feet, what came to mind was the Whomping Willow tree from the Harry Potter movies.

This tree located in Granby, CT is over 400 years old.

pilot assignment

for 400 oneminutes behind the facade

What's behind the façade? On the occasion of the celebration of 400 years Amsterdam canals, we ask your cooperation for a special film about the qualities of living, working and staying in a canal. A detail, a shadow, a worn staircase, a renovated floor, the real green canal paint in a short visual story about 400 years canal houses in 400 pieces of oneminute fiim. We come to your house for one hour to shoot this oneminute. You can contact us through 400 [at] theoneminutes.org.

With this project, we like to bring together the inhabitants and users of the canal houses with a group of young artists so they can show the invisible behind the façade using their senses to document and translate it to film.

400 oneminutes behind the façade is officially part of the World Interior Events that take place in Amsterdam in 2013. It is a program in which the historical, cultural, artistic and economic interests of interior architecture and design are highlighted. It's theme is: "Past, Present and Future of Interiors'. The program is both for professionals and for the general public.
