This transparency is part of a small collection I have of other people's work and is therefore labelled as part of the TOM DERRINGTON COLLECTION

This was given to me in 1976 by a work colleague called Bill Potter [not the famous one!] He was a specialist social worker for the deaf and worked with me at Wilmslow in Cheshire. He was interested in railways but was not a prolific photographer and this and a 9F were the only shots of his I saw of trains in Chester. If Bill is still alive greetings! Whatever the case this is my tribute.

Ex works following its final classified repair Haymarket allocated 40159 pilots 40042 as they depart from Crewe for the North Wales coast with the 0930 Birmingham New Street - Llandudno service, 16th July 1977.40159 was built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry works as D359 and entered service in September 1961, allocated to Haymarket MPD. It has the final variation of nose design featuring a central four-digit headcode panel and no gangway doors, giving a much neater appearance. It was one of a batch of class 40’s (D358-D368) which would always be associated with Haymarket MPD, being used on passenger, parcels and express freight duties from Edinburgh to Newcastle, Carlisle, Inverness and Aberdeen. Eventually displaced in Scotland it transferred to the north west for freight and secondary passenger duties circa 1981 and would remain on these until withdrawn on the 21st March 1982. It would survive for almost another two years until broken up at Swindon works in February 1984. 40042 was delivered as D242 in 1959 and would remain in traffic until withdrawn in December 1980. The end came very quickly for 40042 as by February 1981 it was in the erecting shop at Derby Works being stripped for spares and by March had migrated to the scrap area and had been broken up.

This sort of view isn't possible anymore at this location, and not just because the locos have disappeared. The whole area has been dramatically altered. Behind where I am standing, or crouched really, is where the Class 76 locos used to be stabled

I had spent the day photographing Class 40's on Summer Saturday trains at Chester 12 were seen a good haul 40015/42/47/52/55/87/107/108/115/119/127/139. I was now on my way back home when I got to Crewe I was surprised and pleased to see a Class 37 37290 on the 16:02 to Cardiff it was usualy a Class 46 turn. Above I took this broardside view as the train roared out of Crewe a great sight. It had been a good day's photography it is a reminder of the great day's out you could have at this time. KC. Birmingham to Crewe 87021. 47480 on to Chester. 47471 back to Crewe and 87027 back to New Street. 21/07/1979.

40042 heads south on the East Coast Main Line at Newark with a train of Mark I coaching stock, 5th March 1977. This is undoubtedly an additional train (Merrymaker, Footex, relief etc) and was following close behind 40059 on a similar service. They may have had the train reporting codes of 1G51 and 1G49 respectively. As this was the height of the football season and a Saturday I suspect these were actually Football extras (Footex) with destinations within the Eastern Region as G represented an Eastern Region special working in 1977.

Locomotive History

40042 was delivered as D242 in 1959 and was allocated to Gateshead MPD. Following crew training and running in it was one of a batch of Gateshead allocated class 40’s (D237 -249) that commenced in December 1959 taking over LNER pacific steam duties between Newcastle and Edinburgh. 40042 would remain in traffic until withdrawn in December 1980. This was a bad month for class 40’s when in addition to 40042 eleven more class 40’s were withdrawn. The end came very quickly for 40042 as by February 1981 it was in the erecting shop at Derby Works being stripped for spares and by March had migrated to the scrap area and had been broken up.
