40041 was in store in the former Carstairs steam shed. It was withdrawn / stored in July 1976, whilst allocated to Haymarket depot, Edinburgh and was cut up at BREL Crewe Works in November 1978.
The white spots are feathers etc. from the large number of pigeons that frequented the shed!
The shed housed a number of withdrawn locomotives at that time. Present were: 06.010, 08.145, 08.316, 24.009, 24.128 and 24.147.
It was alway's a pleasure to go round Haymarket depot' sometimes I had a permit and sometimes i just asked I was never refused. Above standing in the sunshine in the yard are 47470 55003 40167. Also on shed that day were: 40041/65/158/167/173/184. 24118/119/123/124/128/129/147. 25014/28. 25228/231. 55003/21. 47141/431/470/517. 26001/5/27. 27110. 08247/752/789. Great Days KC. 20/04/1976.

Class 40 D241 again, but this time at Potters Bar on the 23rd of July 1962 working the Car Carrier which is running with the coaches attached rather than a separate train. I think by the position of the Telegraph POls this is the down service.
The loco was new from the Vulcan Foundry to Gateshead in September 1959 and withdrawn early as 40041 in January 1976. The loco was stripped for spares at Crewe Works and cut up in November 1978.

The date of this acquired B&W neg is June 1961 but I don't have a location.
The Class 40 D241 was Gateshead based at the time and my son reckons the first two coaches are a Thompson and a Gresley so Eastern by the look of it. Out of interest what are the 3rd and 4th coaches?

Walking down from Hollins Cross towards Edale Road at the end of the Great Ridge that separates Castleton and Edale in the Peak District, Derbyshire.
The Great Ridge extends for approximately 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from Mam Tor at the western end of the ridge to Lose Hill at the eastern end, the lowest point being Hollins Cross.
A path runs along the length of the ridge and is roughly paved to prevent erosion caused by the large number of visitors. The only steep section of the path is Back Tor, just east of Hollins Cross, which may not be suitable for the very infirm.
West of Mam Tor, the high ground continues, slightly changing direction, as Rushup Edge.

From a series of negatives I bought at an auction. 40041 was allocated to Carnforth all its working life, so its safe to assume that that is where this shot was taken, on what looks like an organised visit with the chap on the right look as though he is in charge of the children who are dressed in their Sunday best, wonder what mum would have said when they got home covered in coal dust and such like, further, wonder what or where these kids are today...
Taken from a print in my collection, no further details known.

As they’re soon going I rode a few Scanias at the top end of the H98. This is SP40043 leaving the terminus at Wood End Green Lane. They’re a horrendous travelling experience but at least many are warm !
Two main batches of SP survive at Hounslow, 40041-55 and 40191-206, I believe they are officially attached to the H32 and H98 respectively although they are of course pooled together. 6.12.22.

I relaise now { too late] that I should of included more railway men when I took my pictures instead of waiting for them to get out of the way you can see the driver of 24124 leaning right out of the cab to get a better view as he pushes 40184 into the shed and the shunter riding on the steps looking the other way no Health and safty then or hi vis vest's great day's KC.
