Lovely dark centred masses of small flowers. Prostanthera ovalifolia, commonly known as the oval-leaf mintbush or purple mintbush, is a species of flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae and is endemic to south-eastern continental Australia. It is an erect shrub with egg-shaped leaves and groups of mauve to deep blue-purple flowers arranged in groups at the ends of branchlets. Prostanthera ovalifolia is an erect, spreading to dense shrub that typically grows to a height of 1–4 m with stems that are square in cross-section and are moderately hairy. The leaves are egg-shaped, a lighter shade of green on the lower surface, 5–50 mm long and 3–12 mm wide on a petiole 1–6 mm long. The flowers are arranged in groups at the ends of the branchlets with bracteoles 1–2 mm long and 0.2–0.3 mm at the base, but that fall off as the flowers develop. The sepals are 2–3.5 mm long and form a tube 1–2.5 mm long with two lobes, the lower lobe 0.5–1.5 mm long. The petals are mauve to deep blue-purple and fused to form a tube 6–18 mm long. Flowering occurs from August to November.Oval-leaf mintbush is widespread in forest growing on sandstone in south-eastern Queensland and eastern New South Wales. It is also sporadically naturalised in the eastern half of Victoria. 40036

Looking out from Hollins Cross, on the Great Ridge that separates Castleton and Edale in the Peak District, Derbyshire.

The Great Ridge extends for approximately 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) from Mam Tor at the western end of the ridge to Lose Hill at the eastern end, the lowest point being Hollins Cross.

A path runs along the length of the ridge, and is roughly paved to prevent erosion caused by the large number of visitors. The only steep section of the path is Back Tor, just east of Hollins Cross, which may not be suitable for the very infirm.

West of Mam Tor, the high ground continues, slightly changing direction, as Rushup Edge.

Class 76 76004 stand's in the yard at Reddish Depot. I did not go round the depot but loco's visable were 76003/4/36/37/38/43. 40012/36. 24020/21. 25043/208. The weather was not up to much that day 400Asa film all day but still a enjoyable day out. 27/02/1976.

Ribblehead on what looks to be a hazy summer day on the 29th of August 1970.

Green Class 40 D236 is at the head of the 09.25 Glasgow to Sheffield service (did it only go as far as Sheffield? I know it was a Nottingham in the late 70's and early 80's).

The station is much in need of some TLC but there does appear to be a newish looking weather device of some sort on the roof as the station also acted as a Meteorological Station from 1957 apparently.

D236 was new to Crewe North in October 1959 and withdrawn I think from Kingmoor in January 1982.

British Railways English Electric Company Limited Type 4 1Co-Co1 class 40 diesel-electric locomotive number 40036 of Healey Mills Traction Maintenance Depot passes by Heaton Lodge East Junction on the Down Fast line with an eastbound mixed freight train. 12:22, Thursday 30th July 1981

Note, 40036 was built by The Vulcan Foundry Limited (works number D453) at Newton-le-Willows for the English Electric Company Limited (works number 2692) in September 1959 for British Railways as number D236, being renumbered 40036 in week ending 23rd February 1974. It was withdrawn from Eastern Region operating stock in week ending 31st January 1982 while at Healey Mills Traction Maintenance Depot. It was moved to Stratford works, arriving on 19th February 1982. It was moved to Swindon works on 11th May 1982, possibly via Crewe Diesel Traction Maintenance Depot, and was cut up during summer 1982

Ref no 02269

The only things I can say for certain about this photo is that it is of a Class 40 locomotive, that it was taken on Monday 16th August 1976, and that the location is somewhere between Glasgow Queen Street station and Inverness. I'm guessing that it's a station rather than a depot, and (from the position of the sun) that we are looking north - Stirling or Perth perhaps? Possible contenders for the "40" are 40036/051/062/123/145/163/165, although I suppose the headcode discs might narrow that list down.

Solution

Thanks to The KDH Archive and Chris Firth for identifying the location as Perth, and to Jim40135 for identifying the loco as No. 40123.

First Cymru's last Dart is 9.4m Alexander Dennis Pointer 42612, which is based at Port Talbot depot. She tends to not stray too far from her home town. However, she is surprisingly captured on Bridgend's Inner By-Pass when operating Service X1 (Swansea-Port Talbot-Margam-Pyle-Bridgend) in February 2023.

If my maths is correct, 441 Darts have been operated by SWT, Brewers and successor First Cymru since the first batch - Plaxton Pointer-bodied 501-24 (L501-24 HCY) - were delivered to SWT in October and November 1993.

This number includes three under First ownership that left the fleet and returned, and six that were loaned from other First subsidiaries.

Five were acquired for spares only.

The 'step entrance' variants carried Plaxton Pointer, Wright Handybus, Alexander Dash and UVG Urbanstar bodywork, whilst the 'low floor' examples have carried Plaxton Pointer (1 & 2), Marshall Capital and Alexander ALX200 bodies.

The 'odd bods' were UVG Urbanstar bodied 47307, Pointer 2-bodied 40033, 40034, 40036 & 40039 loaned from First PMT and 42784 that were new to New World First Bus in Hong Kong, and Wright Handybus-bodied 40556 that carried a Q-plate.

Will 42612 last long enough in 2023 to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the delivery of the first examples, I wonder ?

One of the things that has interested me over the past week is the repaint of 2 veteran Darts by both First and Citybus.

Citybus have repainted R121OFJ into the 'swoops' livery while First have given a new look to one of the Hong Kong Darts even going to the trouble of removing the roof pod.

The repaint is very welcome for this batch, it was working off on the 76 to Launceston.

A vehicle too far for this train! It was a hell of a fight to get it out of the sidings! Didn't know it at the time, but this this is the area where my ancestors came from, several are buried in nearby Hathersage.

Taken from the signalpost! I was waiting to leave with 40036 bound for Widnes. May have been 20210 rather than 213, I'm going off the enlarged image.

Unfortunately don't have a date for the photo of 40036 which i think is just coming off a train at Edinburgh Waverley.

The loco was new to Crewe North as D236 in October 1959 and withdrawn in January 1982.

The best looking WDP-4B , which was renovated by the UBL DLS people into this look after getting involved in a accident at Penukonda rests on PF8 after bringing in the SBC Rajdhani express 30 min late to SBC !!! This loco has now been transferred to KJM DLS .... !!

Having boarded this tandem circus at Chester, 36 or the driver of said loco decided not to thrash from that point thereon.

I never had 36 boo hoo poor victim/martyr me.😄

No location for this one thought to have been taken in c1974 but prior to May. In shot is class 40 40036 and we think the 25 is 25043 (not correct thanks to Jim) which was the last green 25 which entered Derby Works in May 1976.

The 40 was new from the Vulcan Foundry in October 1959 as D236. Withdrawl was in January 1982 and cutting up at Swindon Works the following August.

It had been raining most of this day on this trip to Doncaster, it's stopped now but it is still very dull, the second man is about to get into the cab of Class 40 40036, it later worked a parcels train from here. Doncaster 06/11/1976.

Light and shade. The light streams through the roof at Stratford picking out the pre-TOPS number of 236 under the grime. The loco had been withdrawn and was awaiting movement to Swindon. The Exceptional Load Notice is dated 28/04/82.

Hubli's WDP4B 40036, now with a new face, accelerates out of Birur with the 2725 Siddhaganga ICE.

The loco was damaged in the horrible Hampi Express accident at Penukonda, AP in May and Hubli DLS has done an amazing job of bringing this baby back on track as soon as possible, with quality bodywork. Thank god they got rid of that fat curvy face. :D

I had come up from Birmingham to Manchester via Crewe to get a few pictures of Class 40's, and here I am at Miles Platting, even after all these years I remember talking this picture, when I got here green Class 40 40137 was standing by those signals in the background, there were not many 40's left in green livery at this time, so I took a few pictures of it in the yard and then walked a bit further up to get a picture of it when it left, the sun was out so I got in position and waited, out it came but as I was waiting for it to get to the right spot a Class 25 25205 came from behind me and was about to block my view so i quickly re focused and took this picture and hoped for the best as I would not know if I got it right until I developed the film , it was not the picture I wanted but at least I had got both loco's in the view. I saw 15 Class 40's that sunny day 40040. 40090. 40095 at Crewe, and 40001. 40010. 40012, 40036. 40091. 40093. 40097. 40110. 40112. 40117. 40124. 40137. and 40150 at Miles Platting. A good day out and for once the sun was shining in Manchester. 16/09/1974.

40036 struggling to get out of Earles sidings - 22nd May, 1981. Guide Bridge driver, Mike 'Lover boy' Lowe, willing the sanders to work! I was able to take the photo from a signal post then walk up the ballast and get on the footplate, then get off again with a newspaper folded into a 'cone' shape, fill it with sand from the sandboxes on the loco and 'trail' the sand onto the line in front of the advancing train! Health and safety? Hah! It worked, though! We got going in the end!
