This scene is looking at the LNWR side of Birmingham New Street during the rebuilding, D229 has arrived from the London direction. Backing onto the station is the Queens Hotel and to the right of it the Rotunda has been built and is being fitted out. Just behind the small signal gantry is a class 03 shunter D23**, it is on station pilot duty. I am rather intrigued by that little building next to the 40, like a mini signal box*.

D229 was built by English Electric, it entered service new to Carlisle Upperby 31/08/1959, it was named Saxonia 05/03/1963. The loco was withdrawn as 40029 25/04/1984 and cut at Doncaster in November 1984.

One of the advantages of train travel back in the good old days was the possibility of opening windows which allowed photography of a passing loco hauled passenger train, or, as here, a freight service.

On this occasion, the Manchester bound emu from Bury is overhauling the 40. I had sufficient advanced warning owing to the length of the consist or trucks and got the camera ready along with the change to a telephoto lens. Quite what any other passengers thought I have no idea but then the attention was on 40029 Saxonia - bereft of a nameplate but the existence of it once evident by bolt heads.

Going the other way Saxonia is part concealing what may be an Inter City Trans Pennine dmu which would have made an incredible extra if the front of it was in view!

The whole scene here has changed dramatically. The skyline of Victoria Station has gone and is now Manchester Arena. The dmu, signal box and 40 are off the scene. The Bury emu has gone and the rout taken over by Metrolink trams.

You may get the occasional freight, or even an excursion with a heritage loco.

Best of luck photographing any of that through the glass window

of a tram.

40029 rests her many wheels in the east loco dock at King’s Cross in September, 1981. This ‘grand old lady’ (as I always think of the ‘40s) lasted in service until July 1984 and was scrapped at Doncaster by the end of that year, after putting in a quarter of a century of solid service.

Class 40 40029 was stood with a Carlisle to Crewe parcels/mail service at the PCD platform at Preston station on June 12th 1978.

The loco had been built at Vulcan Foundry as D229 in August 1959. D229 was named 'Saxonia' commemorating the Cunard liner RMS Saxonia that had been launched in 1954.

D229 was renumbered to 40029 in March 1974 and was in service for over 25 years before being withdrawn with power unit damage in April 1984. The loco was scrapped at Doncaster Works in November 1984.

Storming south with what looks like the return 6F83 Blackburn to Warrington Arpley trip which visited Chorley ROF on the way round, including Metal Box at Westhoughton too.

Although the locomotive was originally named SAXONIA and carried cast nameplates, these had been removed in the early 1970's but here one can make out the hand painted version on the loco bodywork applied.

A notable event occurred I believe in August 1983 when 40029 worked a cross country express through to Bristol Temple Meads. I believe that it may have originated at Manchester but would welcome further information. Here it is seen at Cheltenham Spa.Thanks to David Rostance for confirming that it was the 08.25 Man Picc to BTM. 7/8/1983.

Apologies, but due to having thousands of photographs to clean & label before my son who has no interest in railways bins them, those with poor colours are being converted to "black & white", as I literally haven't got hours to spend on one shot in photoshop & these six are some of the dirtiest that I've had to clean!
