We already knew it would be hard to beat that DM&IR wrecker posted for last week's "Wrecker Wednesday", so how about a gray dip one that is at least nice and fresh looking? Wearing the current "Family LInes" image at the time photographed, L&N #40026 waits for the next call to duty. Given the derailment problems the L&N was having during this time period, it probably was one of the busier wreckers that I have photographed.
A rail tour that has featured elsewhere on my photo-stream, this is the SLS Seven Branch Line tour of 14 April 1962. The Bedford to Hitchin leg was worked by Fowler 3P 2.6.2T 40026, whereupon ex-GNR J52 class 0.6.0ST 1247 carried on up the ECML to Hatfield and thence to Luton Bute Street.

Stabled between duties against the block in platform 8, Class 40 40026 was stood at Blackpool North on May 5th 1979. Visible in the car park were several period vehicles - a yellow British Rail Vauxhall Viva Van, a blue Austin Cambridge, a white Austin/Morris 1800, an orange Mk.3 Ford Cortina and a while Reliant Kitten.
Last one for today and don't have any details other than in is Class 40 D226 on a named WCML service in the 60's. Somewhere in the fells and location is Low Gill (thanks to John and Jay below).
D226 was new from the Vulcan Foundry in August 1959 to Crewe North. It never carried a name for some reason despite being in the D210-D233 batch.
Withdrawl was in August 1980 and cutting up at Swindon Works in September 1983.

On 19 November, the 14714 Sikar Express made its final diesel hauled departure from Gurgaon, marking the end of an era. The train ran from Delhi Sarai Rohilla to Sikar, and TKD WDP-4B 40076 ‘Jhalkari Bai’ and WDP-4D 40026 did the honor one last time.
I have so many memories with this train. I travelled many times from Delhi Cantt to Gurgaon, always behind those strong diesel locomotives. Seeing its last diesel run was very emotional - a moment that was hard to watch, but one I will never forget.

Having retrieved some empty engineers wagons from nearby Brownedge DCE Sidings, Class 40 40026 was in the headshunt at the East end of the goods loop at Bamber Bridge whilst running round on August 8th 1979.
As D226 the loco should have received the name 'RMS Media' after the Cunard ship of the same name. 'Media' was sold to an Italian shipping line in 1961 and D226 subsequently remained nameless.
The loco had been built at Vulcan Foundry in August 1959 numbered D226. It was renumbered to 40026 in February 1974 and was withdrawn from service just over twelve months after this image was recorded, its official switch-off date being August 24th 1980.
40026 was put to the torch at Swindon Works in September 1983.

Ex-LMS Fowler locos at Northampton Castle station on a sunny day in April 1962, during the Stephenson Locomotive Society ‘Tour of Seven Branch Lines’ railtour.
On the left is 3P 2-6-2T 40026, with condensing gear and feed-water pump for operation over the Widened Lines in London. It had entered service in 1931, and was withdrawn at the end of 1962.
On the right is 2P 4-4-0 40646, which had entered service in 1931, and was withdrawn in May 1962.
No examples of either class survived into preservation..
Northampton Castle station was completely demolished and rebuilt in the mid-1960s, in 'modern/brutalist' style, and renamed to just 'Northampton', and today (2025) all lines are electrified.. Passenger services are provided by London Northwestern Railway and Avanti West Coast..

With a Carlisle to Crewe mail/parcels working, 40026 was stood in the PCD platform at Preston on June 16th 1979.
The typical mixed rake of vans includes BR GUV's, a Full Brake BG, Ex Southern Railway PMV vans and BR 4-Wheel CCT's.
40026 was built at Vulcan Foundry, emerging new as D226 in August 1959. It was to have carried the name 'Media' (Cunard Line) but the naming never took place possibly due to the ship being taken out of service by Cunard in 1961, and then sold to an Italian operator who renamed the 13,345 Ton vessel 'Flavia' . A nameless D226 became 40026 in February 1974. The 21 year old locomotive was withdrawn from service from Longsight Depot in August 1980. It was subsequently scrapped at Swindon Works in September 1983.
Having coming to the end of the road 45024 sits in Swindon's "Cond" yard awaiting to be broken up on 12th March 1981. Keeping company with 40026 + 46040, 46034 and others it hung around until being broken up in August 1983.
Entering traffic as D17 in December 1960 this early build Peak was allocated to Derby after rolling out of the nearby works. Originally built as a split headcode machine, it lost this style of nose end at some stage probably during a works overhaul where the drafty connecting doors were removed. Following serious fire damage it was stored in August 1980 at Derby works. Sadly its repair wasn't authorised and it became one of the first Class 45's to be withdrawn, never to received the modified marker light front end. Withdrawn by October 1980 it was for some reason towed to Swindon Works and broken up there.

WR HST FORMATIONS 1976/77/78 – HELP REQUIRED.
If you are viewing this photo and recorded WR HST formations during this period please get in touch via Flickr Mail. I am willing to negotiate payment or make a charitable donation for direct observations that are accurately dated (day/month/year) that detail power car and trailer formations of HST sets in traffic. Additional information such as location, service working also welcome if available. Observations of vehicles/sets on depots or works are also of use, as are those of sets on trial runs.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Any assistance offered/provided would be much appreciated.
This is a pair of interacting galaxies near the end of the Big Dipper's handle. In the full view, you can see some of the faint streams of stars being flung into deep space.
Still have a ton to learn on the processing side but it's nice to have the data acquisition side mostly automated :-)
Full details here.
40026 was stabled at a slightly damp Blackpool North on Bank Holiday Monday, August 27th 1979. The 40 had worked into the resort from Preston with a charter from Watford Junction.
The carriage sidings in the background appeared to be well filled. A scene now utterly changed with the remodelling, resignalling and subsequent electrification completed in early 2018.
40026 was built at Vulcan Foundry, emerging new as D226 in August 1959. It was to have been named after the Cunard Liner 'Media', but was never named as the ship was sold by Cunard to an Italian shipping line in 1961.
D226 was renumbered to 40026 in February 1974. It was withdrawn from service in August 1980 and reduced to 133 tons of scrap metal at Swindon Works in September 1983.

Tyseley depot ceased to function as a steam running shed in November 1966 but, for some months after, it continued to receive visits by steam locomotives from other sheds for tyre turning. Parked in front of the diesel railcar depot on 17th June 1967 are Black Fives 44902 and 45382 from Carlisle Kingmore and Rose Grove respectively, and BR Standard Class 4 75048 from Lostock Hall. DublinBus (Broadstone) AV26
DublinBus' AV26 has held the title of the oldest vehicle in service for some time now. Whilst many newer buses have went into storage for the summer, and many of the oldest AVs have been withdrawn and sold, this and AV46 (the only two remaining from 2000) remain in service during the summer.
AV26 is noted here waiting time on Merrion Square before forming the 1645 66 to Maynooth. AV26 is part of the 'Euro' fleet at Broadstone, in that it only operates at peak times and provides infills to provide additional frequency on certain corridors. AV26 appears marked in on this service now, I was on it myself the day before and was extremely impressed - it was much better than the most recently withdrawn 00 and 01 AVs from Harristown for example.
AV26 is now a sprightly 16 years old and still working busy services - a credit to the team that keep it on the road. AV26 is distinctive in having white indicator caps at the front, which make it easily recognisable against all other ALX400s in the fleet. On this day AV46 operated the 1627 25B exMerrion Square.
Both will likely be withdrawn by the end of the summer.

Class 40 no 40026 meets its end at Swindon Works on 14 September 1983.
40026 had been delivered new as D226 from English Electric in August 1959, and was withdrawn from Longsight depot in August 1980. It was notable for never carrying a nameplate, although numbered within the range D210-D235, all of which had been named after ocean liners. It was later revealed that it had been intended to name D226 "Medea", although for some reason this naming was never carried out.
It was a very dull day in 1976 when i visited Reddish depot ,as i approached i photographed Class 40 40026 standing in the yard i asked permission to go round but no luck, i had to make do with taking pictures of a few Class 76 ,s that stood in the yard never mind i went to Guide Bridge and took a few pictures , although the weather did not improve it was one of those day,s out that did not turn out as i had hoped. 27/02/1976.
