HOW do you like to go up in a swing,

Up in the air so blue?

Oh, I do think it's the pleasantest thing

Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,

Till I can see so wide,

Rivers and trees and cattle and all

Over the countryside—

Till I look down on the garden green,

Down on the roof so brown

Up in the air I go flying again,

Up in the air and down!

Week 10 out of 52 Weeks for Dogs for my Colby

I'm away right now in Atlanta, GA for a volleyball tournament. My daughter's team has the am wave (meaning they are playing between 8 am and 2 pm). I won't be back on flickr until tomorrow afternoon/evening and I'll stop by and visit everyone then. I hope ya'll are having a good weekend!

Our third hunt for the season. The first one was a disaster, Tessa all over the place, chasing, bumping birds, and there were other issues beyond my control (other than that it was a bad move on my part to expose her to those issues) but long story short, totally unacceptable. For the second hunt, I didn't put her in the field until later, after the other two dogs had their run and she wasn't competing nor being interfered with. That worked, and she did better, and I had much more control over what was happening out there.

Today, she was a joy to hunt with. We were assigned a zone that consisted of a narrow stretch of land, mostly chest-high dense sorghum fields, and there were other hunting parties in all adjacent zones, meaning our dogs were not to stray past the perimeter of our zone, which I feared would be a challenge at best. To my surprise, Tessa never ran into the other fields. At first I kept a close eye on her and turned her when she got close to the cut-off, but after a while I didn't even have to do that anymore, it was almost like there was an invisible fence. Maybe she figured out that because of the different terrain, dense cover, and low visibility, she had to hunt close if she wanted to be part of the team.

The first casualty was 1-year old Rhys, who cut his tongue on the sorghum about 10 minutes into it. For those unfamiliar, a dog's tongue can bleed like crazy - I had never seen it before and thought for sure he would bleed out but my friend was completely unfazed and sure enough, Rhys never skipped a beat and the bleeding stopped on its own (left a mess on his beautiful white coat though!).

The field was tough work, but all three dogs worked hard and I suspect that the harder they have to work the more they enjoy it. All birds were accounted for and then some.

Shane, who is 16 years old, had a good run, and came out unharmed, just very, very tired. Rhys somehow managed to collect a lot of cockle burs in his paws, and one paw required veterinary care. Tessa is chafed up on the underside but nothing serious. After 3 hours of running through this stuff, she wasn't even tired when we got home. I am also happy to report that there have not been any signs of lameness or stiffness on the right hind leg that gave us a bit of trouble last year.

Tonto is sitting just insade the open door to the balcony in the stark sunshine. This is a totaly hopeless light situation for anything but a silouette, but with tonemapping technique it's possible to get quite a lot of detail out of the shadow. Thou, if you look at the large format and specially in the face of Tonto, you can see that there are a lot of noise going on.

A wonderful evening at the park - great weather, a cool breeze over warm sunshine. Just perfect.

Tessa and I competed in the dock diving event at PetFest this weekend - she was entered 3 times, and at 2 jumps per wave, she got a total of 6 jumps. At first she jumped 14'9" (click for video), 14' and 14'5" but then we had a Tessa malfunction: She started to run down the dog at her usual full speed, only to stop dead at the edge of the dock where she hesitated, then jumped. One time she refused to jump at all, despite encouragement from me, the crowd and the announcer. Timing out is not like her at all - and I don't know what happened.

But: the 14'9" jump from Saturday secured her a place in the Junior finals (this was our third competition and each time she made the Junior finals). Some people who saw her jump (or rather, not jump) on Sunday only wondered how we ended up in the finals. Sadly, she didn't come out of her funk for the finals, although at least she jumped, albeit only 9 feet or so (which is actually not bad from a standstill but not enough to win anything). She placed last in the Junior finals - 6th place, but still got this wonderful ribbon and it's orange, which is a color she wears well and proudly. Maybe that was the master plan - to take home some orange?

In retrospect, it's actually cool that even though she had a sub-par weekend, she still managed to advance...

Fergus has a 'minor' tear in his right, rear ACL. He's on house-arrest until it heals. The days are long, healing is slow, but I think we're seeing some progress. A recent x-ray revealed he has hip dysplasia in his left hip. Fingers are crossed it's stable and won't degrade over time. He's now on daily glucosamine supplements. He misses his long trail walks and his pals, but naps, lattes and delivery trucks keep him occupied for at least part of the day.

E você vai me ensinar as suas verdades

E se pensar, a gente já queria tudo isso desde o inicio

De dia, vou me mostrar de longe

De noite, você verá de perto

O certo e o incerto, a gente vai saber.

I always like to take a quick shot of my wifes baking especially when it looks this good.

I have to be quick though, they don't stick around for long!

That just simply take me away.

you know, i've always loved dressing up. i danced a lot when i was a baby. when i took pictures, i would strike these poses even as young as 3, maybe 4. do you think i'v changed much?

maybe not. but if you follow the contours of the blanket, you notice this is like the oil price in 2007/2008. Just a thought.

Looking for the needle in the haystack ... or maybe it was a quail ... can't remember.

Long before I was swinging camera gear and to hip jazz tunes!

Augie's got a routine. On my days off, first is to wake me up, no later than 6:20, wait for me to get coffee started, then eat. After she eats, she likes to lie down again for a bit, usually enough time to have my first cuppa. Then it's potty time. After we come back home, it's nap time. (By now it's about 8:00.) After a doze of 1/2 to 1 hour, she gets a bit antsy: it's time to play.

Granted, there's always time to play, but this is the first one, and in summer weather, the most active. Light comes full on into the yard, but the pavement hasn't turned into an oven yet, there's no distractions from people passing by the gates, no other dogs out, and quiet time.

It's nice and quiet. We can hear the sparrows, warblers, robins, and cardinals. Occasionally we hear the kingfishers doing a bit of wandering from the river, and depending on the year, one of the area woodpeckers.

And of course, every 10-15 seconds, the sound of a foot kicking a ball, followed by the scratch of claws on the pavement.

*As a side note, friday was Augie's 3rd b-day. She enjoyed a lot of low-key attention, and some special oversized freeze-dried liver treats.

Week 14 out of 52 Weeks for Dogs for my Colby

Another posed shot for the 52 Weeks for Dogs Group. Not too original but I really wanted flowers in the photo for Easter this week.

I hope everyone had a blessed Easter day.
