Found this partly metallic & shiny tortoise beetle (10mm diam., possibly close to Aspidimorpha sp., Cassidinae, Chrysomelidae, Coleoptera) near Okpara (Parakou, Bénin, West-Africa, May 2018.)

A very common saprotrophic species on rotten trunks of broadleaved trees (Hypholoma fasciculare, Strophariaceae). Found in Niel (Belgium, 13 January 2019).

An amber snail on grass (Succinea putris, Barnsteenslak, Succineidae, Gastropoda). Found in a wet meadow along Gauja (Latvia, Valmiera, image taken 29 July 2016).

We went back to see if the Avocet baby was still around and got lucky! The vignette was created by the grass I was shooting through.
Tiny salticid spider (2mm) sitting on a flowering stem of a Ledebouria in our greenhouse. This was a quiet one (temp was 14°C), not really bothered by camera and extra light.

Found this long yellow Burrowing centipede (approx. 7cm long, Stigmatogaster subterranea, Himantariidae, Chilopoda) in a pile of dead wood in the garden.

Gorgeous beast but excessively difficult to get control over reflections & colors .....
It's a night active carabid beetle (probably Tefflus carinatus violaceus KLUG, 1853; Coleoptera, Carabidae, ID credit: Daniel MAQUET, merci!) of about 37mm long, with black cephalon and bluish-purple pronotum & elytra. Collected from the wetter miombo forests of Katanga (DR Congo, January 2014, pitfall trap, ethanol preserved).

A greyish weevil found in the miombo forests of Upper-Katanga (DR Congo, February 2018). Interesting flowerhead with harpoon-like seeds (Asteraceae), don't know the name.

Yet another splendid and quite flash Amanita from the miombo forests of Mikembo (close to Lubumbashi, DR Congo, ref. ADK6229, Januari 2015). Edible species, but not commonly used for food.

Extreme macro of the lower side of a fern leaf (Microsorium sp., Polypodiaceae). Shows the epidermis cribbled with stomates (for respiration) and a sorus (for reproduction). The latter is composed of densely clustered, still immature, pale-green sporangia. Once mature these will become brownish and produce spores.

A composition of a common frog (Rana temporaria) and a mushroom (Mycena sp.).
Recipe: 1) choose a cool morning, preferably with rain; 2) find a mushroom in a nice spot with a decent background; 3) set up your gear (tripod) and compose for focus bracketing the mushroom; 4) gently catch a frog in the vicinity and place it near the mushroom; 5) focus bracket immediately; 6) if the frog jumps away, start again at 4.
This image took 5 trials, no frog was hurt in the process.

This species typically grows on thick mulch or wood clippings (Geaderde leemhoed, Agrocybe rivulosa, Strophariaceae, Basidiomycota). Found dozens of them near Tomorrowland's entrance (Boom, Belgium, 16 July 2017)

Back from holidays ..... with a first field stack of a resting Ammophila sabulosa (Latvia, Valmiera, July 2013). These guys take long (and almost immobile) breaks. Plenty of time to set up the gear and take shots (late afternoon). The plant (old flowering stems of an Artemisia) was blocked with a clamp (just outside the frame). To reduce impact of the wind on the stem, the lower part was cut loose from the rest of the plant. This made the subject a lot more stable and enabled some re-orientation to get a better background. This wasp was very cooperative!

A quiet little forest lake in northern Latvia with this beauty sitting on a stick (Emerald Damselfly, many thanks to Eddie Nurcombe for the identification)
The green part in the background comes from the plants growing along the edge of the lake, the blue is the sky reflecting in the water.

Not a hornet, but it's the Large alder sawfly (25mm, Cimbex connatus, Cimbicidae, Hymenoptera). Found on the lower branches of Birch, Alder and Salix growing on the beach near Upesgriva (Latvia, 57°22.560'N - 23°2.856'E, 10 August 2016).
This guy was slow enough to enable me to take several fieldstacks (the fast type, without tripod). This stack is based on 57 exposures. Images assembled in Zerene Stacker (Pmax & Dmap), slightly cropped and some corrections in GIMP.

This is a twin spot centurion, a soldier fly (Sargus bipunctatus - Herfstmetaalwapenvlieg, Stratiomyidae, Diptera). Found it dead under the glass of our greenhouse (Boom, 25sept2016).
