This original post is reasonably close to the colors we actually saw.

I was helping a friend get the hang of Lightroom (he was just assimilated into the collective) and he showed me his version. We were both standing at pretty much the same spot at exactly the same time. And his was violently different. I was stunned. Then he said, "yeah, I was just fiddling around with all the sliders and this came out. I like it!"

Whew, I was worried that there might actually be a difference between Canon and Nikon!!!!

So we started playing with the saturation sliders and (this is important - I never tried this before) the hue sliders. And this is what we came up with by fiddling around.

While this doesn't reflect what we saw, it does reflect what we wished we saw. Close enough.

By the way, a monochrome version is coming.

I'm getting some mileage out of this picture.

Not much except to lighten the front of the locomotive and add texture, recrop a little, and fiddle with watermarks

I was hanging out with the model railroad club at Aged Acres (Del Webb here in Elgin) and the subject of the presentation was these locomotives, which are classics. That made me check to see if I had taken a picture when we visited back in June 2006. I did, but thought that the picture could be improved a bit.

This is an invasive weed in North America - but a dang pretty one. I found a small stand of these in the neighborhood prairie restoration so I cut a few down for some photography. The remaining stand will disappear shortly. This section is slated for a prairie burn this spring.

Technical: Amazingly, this picture is uncropped (I always crop a little). There were some tone adjustments so I can't call it SOOC. AB1600 at 1/16 power in softbox on right, foam core reflector on left, triggered by Pocketwizard.

Technical: I wasn't happy with the colors of this photo no matter which way I nudged them. So I oldified it since there's nothing anachronistic in the scene. NOW, I like it. As I like to say, monochrome fixes a lot of problems.

My camera club has a monthly competition night. I don't really try to win - I just submit pictures that have done well on Flickr in the last month. And since most of the successful entries in our club are of birds and animals, I rarely even get close to placing. And some of you know how much I enjoy those subjects. (sarcasm alert)

However I tripped across this shot from 17 years ago and, given that our local judges absolutely LOVE eagles, and they're relatively easy to photograph around here, I thought it was worth a shot. I did a little fiddling to deal with some potential critiques and thought I'd present it to you folks as a redux. Three major problems remain which will be the picture's doom. It will be interesting to see if the judges spot them too.

1. The white "collar" is too bright and will probably be blown out on the monitor we use for the competition.

2. The darkness on the face, while I tried to lighten it, still persists. They won't like that either.

3. The eagle is looking slightly away. The judges will definitely not like that.

But, hey, it's an eagle.

The Chrysler Airflow is a full-size car produced by Chrysler from 1934 to 1937. The Airflow was the first full-size American production car to use streamlining as a basis for building a sleeker automobile, one less susceptible to air resistance.
