"Kyrill (['kɪrɪl], griechischer Vorname) ist der Name des Orkans, der am 18. Januar 2007 das öffentliche Leben in weiten Teilen Europas beeinträchtigte und in Böen mit Windgeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 225 km/h erreichte. Er forderte 34 Todesopfer und führte zu erheblichen Sachschäden sowie zur vorzeitigen Schließung von Kindergärten, Schulen, Universitäten und Betrieben. Ferner kam es zu erheblichen Beeinträchtigungen im Energie- und Verkehrssektor. Über eine Million Menschen waren an diesem Donnerstag zeitweilig ohne Strom, es mussten Flüge gestrichen, Fährverbindungen eingestellt, Straßen gesperrt und der Bahnverkehr in einigen Teilen Mitteleuropas nahezu vollständig eingestellt werden, so dass zehntausende Reisende betroffen waren.
Das Tiefdruckgebiet, aus dem sich der Orkan entwickelt hat, entstand am 15. Januar 2007 über Neufundland und zog danach Richtung Osten. Es erreichte Mitteleuropa am 18. Januar 2007. Bereits zwei Tage zuvor waren erste Unwettervorwarnungen herausgegeben worden, später wurden für viele Teile Mitteleuropas amtliche Unwetterwarnungen veröffentlicht.
