Valkenburg, 28 August 2003.

P-3C 301 on the flightline of Valkenburg a few years before the base closed (July 2006). It looks factory fresh after the major CUP-update it received in Portugal.

This Lockheed Orion was sold to Germany and carried on as 60+01. In March 2020 the plane was severely damaged during refuelling. A fuel tank exploded damaging the plane beyond economical repair.

The other seven P-3C's are now set to be retired by 2025 instead of 2035. The Boeing P-8 Poseidon was chosen as the successor.

With freshly overhauled engine

This 3c was 1st registerd in Mantova (Italy) in August 1974.

Engine: three-cylinder dohc (triple)

Capacity: 981 cc

Bore x Stroke: 75mm x 74mm

Output: 80 hp (63 kW) @ 7,250rpm

Top Speed: 210km/h / 130 mph

A specialty is the 180° crankshaft arrangement, in which the center piston is at the top of its stroke when the two outer pistons are at the bottom. This purposefully out-of-phase design gave the 1,000 cc Laverdas a distinctive character. (Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laverda)

About to line-up on runway 05. Training the Germans. The 13 Dutch Lockheed P-3C Orions were sold to Germany (8) and Portugal (5). The Dutch flight crews had the honour to train their German colleagues. The last Orions of the Marineluchtvaartdienst (MLD) left in 2006.

301 became 60+01 in the Marineflieger. In March 2020 the plane was severely damaged during refuelling. A fuel tank exploded damaging the whole plane beyond economical repair.
