The 3FOLD surgical delivery tool makes it easy for surgeons to insert pacemakers into the Hylomate pouch, which prevents scar tissue and complications. In order to adapt the foldable tool to the user, the conditions of an operating theatre were replicated as abstractly as possible during the design process. The setup was designed to be as compact as possible so that various prototype variants and iterations could be tested by cardiologists at the heart centre in Berlin even during the pandemic. The tests were accompanied online and evaluated with relevant parameters in video analyses. The protocol of the "Remote Usability Testing of Physical Products" was published in the form of a paper.

With this animation we visualise the synthesis of design, science and medicine that has been created in the design of a foldable surgical delivery instrument.

During the 3FOLD research project, designers, scientists and surgeons worked together to create a tool to quickly and safely insert pacemakers into a ""Hylomate"" pouch that prevents scar tissue and complications. The soft shape and kirigami fold allow for a non-contact and uncomplicated application in the operating room without damaging the pouch or creating further contamination risks.
