This is another much loved and well used 3D or stereo camera from my collection - the German built RBT X4 35mm film camera. It used a pair of Cosina 35 - 70mm zoom lenses linked beautifully together to perfectly match the aperture, focus and zoom, and it also had the ability to use both viewfinders to view in 3D what you were actually taking. Here it also has a matching pair of circular polarising filters which I had to line up manually in order to get them to match. Apart from the complex mechanical internals, it was a simple, good old fashioned fully manual camera with nothing more than a basic built in light meter.
It has had a hard life in my hands (as you can see!) as I put it to good use for a lot of years and it helped with my collection of 3D slides from our round Australia journey back in 2004 where it was used in conjunction with a pair of Canon SLR cameras. Sadly it is no longer working. No local camera repairers were game to pull it apart and have a look. It has a complex mechanism for winding on the film each time the shutter is pressed, and that seized up totally. It has to alternate between winding on one frame, then three frames in order to space the stereo pairs on the film and use all the frames with no gaps. I could have sent it back to the German manufacturer for repair, but a lot of extra expense was involved in that at a time when I was a little short of spare cash for such projects. As you can see, it has had a hard life, and is even held together on one of the lens linkages with a carefully reshaped paperclip which I used for an urgent repair when the original fell off somewhere near Albany in Western Australia! On our journey around Australia, it attracted a heap of attention from other tourists and even some local newspaper journalists in several areas. I recall a short article about it and me appearing in the local Alice Springs newspaper. Not a day went by on the trip without me explaining what it was to somebody, and I was always happy to talk about it. It was a really enjoyable camera to own and use.
My dad is the bomb! He drove a whole grip of his old camera gear across the country with him to give me. This is just a small sampling of the goodies he brought. The camera at the bottom is a 3D camera! Whoah! How cool is that?

3D high-speed camera, laser controlled version 2012. The mechanical assembly is complete. Next task is to connect all the cables and write the software. This camera system is especially designed for capture flying insects in closeup in 3D. The IR laser signals are used for auto detection if the insects are in focus. Detection delay is superfast and only 120 us (0.12ms). The smallest size of an insect in-flight is 1 mm at 500mm from the macro lens.
Specs:
2 Nikon cameras now D300+D200 but the D200 will be replaced in the future.
2 x Nikkor AF105/2.8D macro lens.
Flashes SB-800, SB-80-DX.
Flash power control via TTL on the control box.
Beamsplitter plate (50/50) size 85x60mm x1mm.
Stereo base shift 4-15mm.
2 x IR pulsed lasers at 980 nm pulsed 30us On 30 us Off.
In-flight object detection minimal 60 usec delay, normal 120 us (2 times correct level).
Detection lens for IR reflected signals AF50/1.8 Nikkor, detection delay max 120 us (0.12ms)
IR laser beam pass through the same beamsplitter (on the side) and goes via a small frontside mirror to the detector lens at 90 degree.
2 x Green lasers to see where the virtual focuspoint is located for pointing the camera at the subject.
IR laser sensitivity surface minimal 1mm x1mm at 500 mm distance from the lens.
Global controller: ATmega328p @16MHz.
IR detector Attiny26 + BPW41N photodiode built in narrow-bandpass filter.
Camera synchronization via AVR controller and 10 pins Nikon connector, shutterdelay set at 58ms (52ms if 2x D300).
Burst mode set to 3 frames/sec.
Input connection for an external control signal to capture waterfigures in 3D.
Power via 6 x AA batteries, High efficiency DC/DC converter for the laser power (3.3v 750 mA).
All PCB's single layer, so self-etching can be done.
Weight: 7.2 kg.

The complete wiring is done. The software is written and is now being tested. Most functions are working now. Still perform the mechanical adjustment and the recordings can begin. Synchronization between cameras is done. Both of these flashes power can be adjusted through the beautiful central control. This is the absolute minimum for 3D macro shots. 2 cameras and the beamsplitter. There remains much work to do. I can do the alignment tests now. The D300 can shift 10mm to adjust the stereo base. The D200 shift into the other direction to adjust both cameras for the same frame calibration. Error is near zero now, stereo base default 8mm. This 8mm stereobase will be good for a picture frame between 80 and 120mm, but if needed I can optimizing the position of the D300.
The fully finished version will be portable to walk in the field. The D200 will be replaced later by a second D300. Both cameras are synchronized via the 10 pins connector. The dimensions of the beam splitter are 60x85 mm. There is a dark protection needed around the beam splitter before taking pictures. I'm going to prepare the lasers, 2 IR lasers and 2 green lasers. The IR lasers are used to detect the flying insects into the focus point. A third measure of lens will be on the leftside. The complete control electronics are also mounted on the leftside.
My boss found this camera in his basement and gave it to me. It worked pretty well but the right side lens was loose and wobbly. You would have to hold it down tight to the camera body for it to take a focused picture.
The right side lens assembly adjusts the aperture and the left side adjusts the shutter speed.

A previous upload, processed with a terrain generating program. Converting the colours of the original image in to an interactive depth map. Two screenshots were captured to create this stereoscopic version. The original image is of a televisions pixels, magnified and distorted through a crystal ball. Initial image captured using an SLR, (see comments) then processed on an iPod touch, using the apps 'InsanoGraph' and '3D Camera'.

This diagram is an aid in determining the timings. There are many conditions to enable camera, lasers and flashes. For safety lasers are enabled only when really necessary. Once the shutter is open, they must also be disabled to prevent them in the picture.
Since there are 2 different cameras, the shutter-lags are not equal. A short delay between the 2 shutter drive signals solves this. The IR laser is only actief if a record sequence is actief. IR lasers ares pulsed On/Off to measure the light difference between ambient light and ambient-light+IR lasers reflected light. The flashes are started only once if both shutters are full open. This is about 59 ms, 1 ms later than the longest shutter-lag.
The green laser signals are asynchroon to this sequence via the Gr_knop, only during the shutter-open time they need to be disabled to avoid them in the picture.
Not all signals are show here, if the Stop signal is activated, the hole sequence is stopped and no picture is taken. The Rec_Knop start a sequence and without the need for the detection signal. Here always a picture is taken.
Most of this function are now ready into the software, a Atmega328p controller. The IR detector use a Attiny26 controller and send the detection signal to the Atmega328p controller. Flash power control are done via the LCD-Keyboard module in 1/3 EV steps. Left and right side have their own power setting. The detector sensivity has 4 software levels on the LCD-Keyboard and 5 stops diaphragm on the AF50 lens.
There is also a wakeuptime of 200 ms before the IR lasers are activated. This is need if the camera is not used for a longer period and goes into sleepmode. If there is no IR detection signal received, a Stop signal can abort the record sequence without pictures. Because the shutters are only activated after a detection signal, the record waiting periode sequentie can be as long as you wish.

D300 + D300 for 3D high-speed macro.
Yes finally I have 2 equal D300 cameras for 3D higspeed macro closeup records. Tomorrow I will begin the final assembly together with the adjustment for the 3D setup anno 2012. Finally, the differences in colour between the 2 cameras are resolved.
Now a small update for the software sync, the new shutter-lag is now reduced a little to 53 ms versus 58 ms with the D200+D300. Next days I can take the first 3D pictures, because the hardware is finished and the software is tested., a week before the final deadline of 1 march.

Of course 2 x AF105/2.8D micro lenses are used to take perfect 3D closeup pictures. A beamsplitter 50/50 is used, but this will be show into the next final setup picture.
