Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park, close to the town of Chillagoe, in Marreeba, Queensland, Australia.
The park contains about 1,000 caves, spectacular karst landscape and mining history, making it a tourist attraction. Leading geologist Professor Ian Plimer says that the Chillagoe region has the most diverse geology in the world.
The town of Chillagoe was named by William Atherton in 1888. The name is taken from the refrain of a sea shanty: "Hikey, Tikey, Psyche, Crikey, Chillagoe, Walabadorie". James Mulligan had explored the area in 1873 and Atherton backed up his reports of rich copper outcrops in the area. Mining pioneer John Moffat sent prospectors to the field in 1888 and quickly monopolised the field. A receiving office opened in 1891 (with W. Atherton as Receiving Office Keeper) but closed in 1893. A post office opened in 1900 with F. Donner as the storekeeper and postmaster. The Chillagoe Railway and Mining Company's line opened from Mareeba in 1901 and a Town Reserve was proclaimed 27 October 1910.
Chillagoe is sometimes remembered for its involvement in the Mungana affair, a mining scandal which brought down the government. In 1919, after fluctuating fortunes and closures, ownership of the smelter was transferred to the Queensland Government. This acquisition by the Labor Government brought allegations of political corruption which persisted for many years. Closures plagued the smelter again in the late 1920s. When the Labor Party lost power in 1929, the new government ordered a Royal Commission into the incident. The political careers of two former Queensland Premiers, 'Red' Ted Theodore and William McCormack, were ruined by the Commission’s report. Read the famous book by Frank Hardy: "Power without Glory".

The Bristol Citylines brand has become rather diluted in recent times, with the 5 discontinued, 1/2 never really incorporated, and the Blue, Green and Red versions all regularly straying from their respective routes, as shown here with East branded 39409 in the North.

This week's Railway Roundabout brings us to the Blue Circle cement terminal in Handsworth in the West Midlands.
I took this on the Velvet Glove railtour in 1991, a highlight of that trip being a run up what was then a 'freight stub' from Langley Green further west, when the track only ran as far as here, by the site of Handsworth station, which closed in 1972.
At this time, common sense had already prevailed as plans to reinstate this line for passenger services had by then been approved, trains running under the wires to Birmingham's Snow Hill station by 1995.
In addition, trams also run along here up to Wolverhampton, using the old GWR trackbed. Whilst Handsworth has not regained its mainline station, the district is served by the West Midlands Metrolink. Further up, The Hawthorns is served by both train and tram, being adjacent to the home of West Bromwich Albion.

Yet there was a Gemini on 17 which is a 'City Lines East' route. How can schedulers justify large capacity modern double-deckers on lightly-used routes?

39409 YN69DVY is one of a large batch of new Scania CNG bio buses with e400city bodies delivered to First in Bristol, replacing a large proportion of elderly fleet at a stroke.
It is seen on the A420 at Lawrence Hill; the large office block behind being the former headquarters of Bristol Omnibus Co. The Citylines branding is also a nod to the successor to BOC in the city.
