Another frame from this delightful chase last summer. Alas this can't be repeated as 3850 suffered a catastrophic electrical fire about 6 weeks after this photo and will most like be retired or sold for rebuild fodder. But here is the caption I wrote at the time:
At one of THE signature locations along the south end of the old Central Vermont Railway New England Central Railroad train 608 has slowed to 10 MPH as they cross Spring Street at MP 49.7 on the Palmer Sub approaching the sharp curve through the center of town just ahead. For a moment it looks like nothing has changed as the 33 car train heads to Willimantic rolling beside the Middle River in the picturesque village of Stafford Springs.
608 is assigned two of the last three blue and gold original NECR units dating from the road's 1995 start up when Railtex purchased the CV assets from the CN. EMD GP38 #3850 and GP38AC #3857. The former was blt. Aug. 1969 as Gulf Mobile and Ohio 712 and the latter blt. Apr. 1971 as Gulf, Mobile and Ohio 730.

This Santa Fe eastbound had stalled at Bealville, on California's unforgiving Tehachapi Pass, and GP50 3850 and GP39-2 3676 were taken off a westbound to rescue the stricken train. Here the ensuing ensemble emerges from Tunnel 5, just before sunset.

This was a captive Ringneck I discovered sitting on its owner's shoulder today. He very kindly allowed me to take a quick photo. To see it so close up was truly magnificent - it was/is so beautiful.
Doing some research, I find that this is an Indian Ringneck, a parakeet, very popular as a pet.

Maybe "wither" is the wrong word, since NECR 3850 went out with a bang, catching fire while powering train #608.
At any rate, here she is a few weeks before meeting her demise, working Palmer yard on another day's 608, along with sister 3857.
The red heavyweight coach to the right is part of the Steaming Tender restaurant. It was once part of the New Haven's wire train, then spent time on the Grafton & Upton before landing here.
