A dull start to the day does nothing to dampen the fine sight of the Midland Pullman heading west at Dawlish Warren with the 5.53am Shrewsbury - Penzance (1Z43) 'Mazey Day Pullman'. HST power car 43055 heads the train with 43049 bringing up the rear.

10am thru' 11am proved a good hour for rail enthusiasts looking for something a little different down here - during that period, as well as the Mazey Day Pullman, 66019 worked the returning empty china clay tanks, D1015 ā€˜Western Champion’ passed through on a special from Dorridge (also heading to Penzance), and Derby RTC unit 37501 passed through light-engine. Plenty to occupy even the most discerning rail-snapper then.

For this one I opted for the going-way shot to incorporate the Langstone Rock backdrop. It looks like a few photographers were positioned on its slopes too, and I hope the snapper in the foreground got the images (or video) he was after. The talking heads perhaps have a mild interest in the colourful spectacle unfolding - but then again it’s only a HST masquerading as the Midland Pullman, and there's been no shortage of the former in these parts over the last 50 years.

Image processed to allow the train colours to 'pop' a little. Goes to full-screen quite well. Comments off for this one, thanks.

11:10 Bridgenorth to Kidderminster. Class 37 diesel-electric locomotive. It was built by English Electric in 1961 as D6705. Over its long career, it has held multiple numbers:

37005 (from 1974)

37501 (from 1986 following a heavy refurbishment)

37601 (from 1995 for Eurostar/Nightstar stock movements)

37501 (Reverted back to this original refurbished number in 2025)

It is iconic for its unique British Steel Light Blue livery (also known as "Teesside Steelmaster" blue), which it first received in 1986. currently owned by Europhoenix and operated by Rail Operations Group (ROG). It remains active on the UK national network as of late 2025, often used for unit drags (like Class 730 EMUs) or attending enthusiast events like the "65 Years of Class 37" gala where this photo was taken having departed Bewdley and passing the yard.

37501 Teesside Steelmaster, with West Midlands Railway "Aventra" EMI 730002 in tow, passes Small Heath, working 5Q65 17.16 Tyseley LMD - Soho LMD.

Today had been planned around this working, as I had not yet managed to take a sunny picture of this loco since it was repainted into the British Steel colours it originally gained in the late 1980s - although I've got plenty of pictures of it as 37601, in DRS and Europhoenix livery. It had been booked to work 8Q66 from Soho to Tyseley the previous day, which I guess was the same EMU and I also guess going for tyre turning; having had confirmation that the train had run and that 37501 was at Tyseley, I began to plan the rest of the day.

Also in the system was a 5Q94 from Crewe South Yard to Long Marston, taking a rake of off-lease TransPennine Express mark 5 coaches. That was due in the Worcester area at about 1pm, and I planned to go to Lower Moor (between Pershore and Evesham) for it. So I intended to spend much of the day around there, and then head here during the afternoon. Looking at what else was about, I decided to get there early to photograph the Cardiff Tidal to Burton-upon-Trent freight at Stoke Prior, where it was due not long before 9am (a shot I'd not done since the days of 47s on Cross Country services!). But as I approached the end of the M42, the sun went behind a big bank of cloud - and didn't begin to break up until about twenty minutes after the freight had passed. A message came through about a Longsight to Banbury mark 5 stock move, and it soon became apparent that 5Q94 to Long Marston was not running. My plans for late morning and early afternoon then changed drastically...

Despite the sky seeming to be completely devoid of clouds, as 5Q65 set off from Tyseley and I got ready to take the picture, the light dipped very slightly! The sun had gone behind a tiny "floater", but thankfully the main shadow was over Small Heath station and within seconds the foreground was fully lit again (it had never been as dark as the background).

I was quite surprised to be the only photographer here for this.

It reversed out of the stabling sidings onto the down slow line - a puff of clag indicates that it has just started the last leg of its duty.

The weather held out just long enough to get the shot - it was blustery with occasional heavy showers but the light rain that was falling did not prevent a flight for the drone.

I was hedging my bets with this, mainly due to the amount of cloud that had built up. Hindsight tells me that I'd probably gone a bit too high for it, although I quite like how the in-flight camera dealt with the bright colours of 501, as well as the overall view obtained.
