Lecterns were used by the clergy to read from the scriptures or to sing the liturgy. Here, an eagle's wings support a bookrack, with a smaller rack, possibly for the use of choirboys, below. The eagle, symbol of Saint John the Evangelist, may refer to his Gospel, which begins with praise for the Word of God. The bird's claws hold a dragon, an allusion to the Word's victory over evil. The figures attached to the sculpture include Christ, Saint Peter, and the Virgin and Child with the three Magi.

31st National Veterans Wheelchair Games
August 1 - August 6, 2011
Pittsburgh, PA
The largest annual wheelchair sports competition in the world, this event offers 17 different sports to Veterans who use wheelchairs due to spinal cord injuries, amputations and neurological diseases. The Games promote rehabilitation through rigorous competition in such events as basketball, rugby, softball, hand-cycling and others. A special "Kids Day" program allows children with disabilities to meet the athletes and be introduced to wheelchair sports. While past Games have produced national and world-class champions, the Games also provide opportunities for newly disabled Veterans to gain sports skills and be exposed to other wheelchair athletes.
