The Sewing Time Machine: A blouse named 'Secretary001'

The Sewing Time MachineWednesday, January 27, 2010A blouse named 'Secretary001'Here is my next project, or the inspiration for my next project. I'm no expert on the matter but this reminds me of a 40's pencil pushing office blouse, which is why I named it Secretary001.It looks to me like all the control has been shifted into side darts which were then gathered into the side seams. The sleeve looks like a very short kimono or dolman. Anyways, I got to work on the PatternMaster and this is my first muslin.

I'm not happy because I look like a bag lady!

So I learned that when zero waist darts are selected, the slack is not picked up anywhere else - not in the side seam and not in other darts. I'll have to manually shift all the control into the side dart. And that will be my second muslin....Posted by Marie-Anne at 6:28 PMLabels: blouse, fitting, PatternMaster Boutique0 comments:Post a CommentNewer Post Older Post HomeSubscribe to: Post Comments (Atom)PagesHomeAbout MeMarie-AnneWhen I'm not cleaning, cooking, or working, I'm going back in time....with my sewing machine!View my complete profileThis WeekChris' jacket is lined and it looks great. HAIR

We've been tracking this hair trend closely for weeks, and it shows no sign of stopping. Hollywood's updos just keep getting bigger, higher and more bulbous. Here are two new examples from this week's red carpets.

Kate Beckinsale stepped out in Cannes with a hair sculpture that, in its size and drama, rivals the Jennifer Lopez concoction that some might say launched this whole huge-bun trend.

And yes, that baby got back.

HAIR

1) "No hairspray until you have the right shape." 2) "The more Elizabeth Taylor-looking it is, the better!"

These great declarations were made by Redken's creative consultant Guido--a man so revered in beauty and fashion circles that he (like Madge) needs no last name. He's responsible for masterminding a slew of jaw-droppingly beautiful 'dos including those wispy Alberta Ferretti buns, Marc Jacobs' kicky ponies and the sculptural chignon that I snapped at the Nina Ricci show:

Instead of taking you through the how-to on these big--but not bulky--buns I'll just list off few of the multi-purpose tricks they used because after all, how often do you have the need for a massive chignon? (If your answer to that question is ALL THE TIME, jump straight to the end and starting writing in all your updo tips now because you've probably got dozens of 'em already!)

Hair Tip #1: To make the bun a little more fluffy, stylists teased the length of the hair when the 'do was still in the ponytail stage. You'd be amazed at how a little backcombing can amp up the volume on a basic bun.

Hair Tip #2: Following Guido's guidelines, stylists didn't spritz the bun with hairspray until they had gotten the exact right shape and had already pinned it into place. There was no spritzing-here-and-there along the way, which makes sense since it's hard to un-do the form that a serious holding spray--like the Redken 23 Forceful Finishing Spray that they used--creates.

Hair Tip #3: They did however use a flexible hairspray while creating the updo's ponytail. After securing hair into a mid-level ponytail, stylists alternated between using a bristle brush and a spritz of hairspray to create a super smooth, super sleek finish. As someone who struggles (slash get inexplicably and insanely frustrated) with all the lumps and bumps that mysteriously pop up when I go to slick my hair back into a ponytail or bun, this is a simple trick that I'm definitely filing away. If you think you will too, here's a sampling of the products they used to create the look:

Fashion experts affirmed that Hepburn's longevity as a style icon results from her sticking with a look that suited her: "clean lines, simple yet bold accessories, minimalist palette."[105]

Untitled Clipped Note

"[Givenchy] gave me a look, a kind, a silhouette. He has always been the best and he stayed the best. Because he kept the spare style that I love. What is more beautiful than a simple sheath made an extraordinary way in a special fabric, and just two earrings?" revealed Hepburn.[102] Givenchy created her outfits for many other films, including Funny Face, Love in the Afternoon, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Paris When It Sizzles, Charade and How to Steal a Million (in which at one point her character is disguised as a cleaning woman and the male lead, played by Peter O'Toole, remarks that this "gives Givenchy a night off"). The designer was always amazed that, even after thirty five years of collaboration, "her measurements [had] not changed an inch."[102] Givenchy remained Hepburn's friend and ambassador, and she his muse, throughout her life. Hepburn observed, "I have many things in common with Hubert. We like the same things."[102] She agreed to model, on occasions, the creations of her friend. In 1988, when he presented his summer collection in Paris, she said, "Wherever I am in the world, he is always there. He is a man who does not disperse into worldliness. He has time for those he loves."[102] Givenchy subsequently created a perfume for her titled L'Interdit (French for "Forbidden").

She equally inspired fashion photographer Richard Avedon, who captured an intentionally overexposed close-up of Hepburn's face in which only her famous features – her eyes, her eyebrows, and her mouth – are visible. "I am, and forever will be, devastated by the gift of Audrey Hepburn before my camera. I cannot lift her to greater heights. She is already there. I can only record. I cannot interpret her. There is no going further than who she is. She has achieved in herself her ultimate portrait."[103]

Angelina Jolie Collaborating on Jewelry Line - Jewelry - Accessories - WWD.com

As if being an actress, director, mother and U.N. goodwill ambassador didn’t keep her busy enough, Angelina Jolie is collaborating on a jewelry collection.

She has teamed with Robert Procop, a former chief executive officer of Asprey, who now makes bespoke pieces under the name Robert Procop Exceptional Jewels, to create a collection of jewelry with statement stones.

Procop has been designing pieces for Jolie for the past decade, and they began their collaboration over the last year. The actress wore one of the pieces they created, a faceted black spinel necklace bezel set in rose gold, to the premiere of her film “Salt” in Berlin last summer.

“Angelina has very classic style,” said Procop, who showed items from his collection in London last week. “These are pieces she wears herself.”

Among the collaborative pieces are a pebble-size, pale green 353-carat beryl pendant, in a rose gold setting and worn on a chain of cushion shape beryl stones, and a graphic, tablet-shape 12.02-carat vivid green emerald ring set in rose gold. Procop said Jolie’s design for the emerald was inspired by “ancient tablet engravings,” and is based on a similar design she created with Procop as a gift for her partner, Brad Pitt.

Pieces from the collection will not be sold in stores, but will be sold privately through Procop’s network of clients, with all of the proceeds from the collaborative designs going toward Jolie’s charity, the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict. Each piece will be priced individually.

The collection follows Jolie and Pitt’s collaboration on a capsule jewelry line with Asprey last year, which also benefitted the actress’s charity.

Procop designed and sourced pieces that Jolie wears in her new movie, “The Tourist,” including a vintage diamond choker and a pair of yellow sapphire, rectangular cushion cut earrings.

In addition to serving as ceo of Asprey for two years, Procop was ceo of the then-Asprey & Garrard from 1999 to 2000. After the brands were split, he was ceo of Garrard from 2006 to 2008. For the latest venture, Procop said he was drawn to his roots in “exceptional jewels.” Procop has opened a design studio in Beverly Hills, as well as a laboratory in Geneva and offices in New York and Hong Kong.

He noted that in uncertain economic times, many of his clients see major jewelry purchases as investments. Procop works with stones such as emeralds sourced from Colombia, sapphires from Brazil and red and pink diamonds from the Argyle mines in Australia. Among his current designs are a 77.45-carat, brilliant step cushion cut sapphire ring and a 77.7-carat paraiba ring set in rose gold.

“The design of the jewelry starts with the stone, and how to maximize its brilliance and color,” Procop said. “I design the piece of jewelry around it — a beautiful stone should sit by itself.”

Fashion experts affirmed that Hepburn's longevity as a style icon results from her sticking with a look that suited her: "clean lines, simple yet bold accessories, minimalist palette."[105]
