As I enjoyed 2023's project so much I figured I'd carry on.
A relaxed affair again this year but with an emphasis on getting outside more often. That's the plan anyway.
First up a stick in a puddle.
Happy days.
I took my Surly Midnight Special for one final ride out to Governor's Island before taking it in for the annual tune over at Black Saddle I've got a bit more than the usual overhaul coming with this one. I'm excited for the changes and can't wait to share with you in due time! The snowmageddon on its way as I type this post lets me know I'll be more reliant on the fat bike for commuting the next couple months at least. Be safe and happy winter everyone.
Ohh yeah, the lakes not frozen quite yet. I'm thinking it might be a while before I venture out.
Even though the hair on top of my head grows thin, It doesn't mean I don't trust a true professional with my beard. I've had the honor of being lined up, faded, and trimmed at the Atwood Barbershop for the last 2 and 1/2 years.
While attempting some late-night long exposures I was approached by "Busy," who inquired what time it was. A glance at my watch and I realized time had gotten away from me as it was nearly 7:30. I hadn't gotten much for a worthy photo during the night, I walked and he wheeled alongside and asked me if I wanted to get a photo of him doing a flip at the skate park. We shared a laugh, but I did tell him we could do a portrait in the style of his choosing (even if I had the slightest hopes that he would do a trick in the chair).
As we arrived at the skate park he told me that he was in the process of trying to get away from some problems in the city, unfortunate actions were finally catching up with him. While I felt bad for him he seemed to see a light of sorts and explained to me why it would be better to just turn himself in. He'd have free meals, a place to sleep that was safe, and a gym to keep up his strength. I asked how long he thought he'd be locked up for, and he answered quickly that it might be a year or less depending on behavior (apparently not his first stint). I told him that I hoped we would cross paths again in a year and reminisce about the night's events.
He smiled and decided we should get a photo before he had to make up his mind, he went to the light and looked up. Clicking off a few frames at ISO 16,000 given our light was dim and in short supply. I shared with him the results which were met with agreement that we had one that would work. He then asked where he could get a copy, which I didn't have my phone on me but he told me the shelter where he had connections that I could bring a copy of the photo and someone would get it to him. We shook hands and he disappeared into the night and I walked back to my car, hoping the best for his future.
A perfect stranger to include in the (608)strangers and the 100 strangers group for discovering more random people that other people meet.
I recently traded a print for some bike work over at @slowrollcycles and turned my Fuji into a more rideable middle season bike. Complete with new grips, handlebar, and tires complimented with red accent cable housing this bike will let me put a little less wear and tear on my main steed.
The inaugural ride only accounted for about five miles, but I'm quite certain it will be the first of many to come! There was never a doubt in my mind that I had to capture a photo to show it off for my #366project2024 Be sure to check out Slow Roll cycles and in time you'll find one of my photos gracing the walls too!
In the end, if we're lucky enough all we have is just the memories. If we can't remember, hopefully the pictures will help.
For this I laid flat on my stomach and had high hopes for more colors reflecting, no such luck c'est la vie.
Unseasonably warm weather brought Lady Liberty for the UW-Hoofers annual winter festival.

I recently had Bruce (my Surly Wednesday) tuned at Black Saddle Bike Shop because I knew that once the snow came down in more than a dusting I'd be turning in my Midnight Special for the season.
Fast forward to Tuesday the 9th when Madison received its first significant snowfall since a rare late March snowstorm last year.
It was great to be able to commute to work in the snow (even if we didn't get nearly as much as originally ordered), after resting for a bit at home I saw the giant snowflakes outside my window and knew I had to go get the customary first snow fat bike pictures. With winds gusting at 20mph+ and snow pelting my face it was a pure moment of winter time bliss.
This is fat biking.
A few things I've learned riding my fat bike for commuting in ice and snow.
1) Leave at least 30 minutes earlier.
2) Make sure to check the tire pressure and inflate/deflate accordingly.
3) Remember to have fun and if someone calls you a nut, be a cashew! Because why not a cashew?
The ongoing demolition of several buildings on the square to make room for the new Wisconsin Historical Center gives off some apocalyptic vibes after dark.
A few of my favorite haunts around campus devoid of students combined with a bit of winter weather and fog makes for an eerie scene.
I couldn't help but be drawn to a human form in the derelict state of the Lake Street parking garage downtown. As is with many structures in Madison, it's being replaced with a underground parking garage and mixed use skyscraper. Crane city is here to stay.
This is @jakeapalooza and his Surly Midnight Special, he knows how special the Midnight Special truly is. He's no stranger to a good bike ride, even if he is a bit more rebellious than I.
It's been over 10 months since I've driven to work, the recent edition of Bar Mitts was a definite game changer, especially with the Sub-Zero temperatures last week
After a slight mishap on the ice my day off and 3 extra days off for a little rest in recovery I returned to form with no more than a bruised ego. Mother nature had her way for my ride to work Tuesday morning and gave me a drizzle that transitioned into snow by the time I came home from work that afternoon. No matter for me, I was done so slow and steady wins the race. The steak continues!
It's hard to believe how tiny Astra was when we rescued her, needless to say she's really growing into her own now. I've never had a dog previous to getting Jedi but he was already 5 months old when we got him: So to see Astra transform from 10 weeks to 7 months has been quite amazing.
Of monsters and men.
Demolition work continues on the Lake Street parking ramp at the end of the State Street in downtown Madison. Clearing room for an underground parking and mixed use retail with housing structure.
Captured this with a Nikon 105mm f/2.5 Pre AI courtesy of my friend Andy who owns a used camera gear shop in St. Louis.
Author and former inmate of Alcatraz, William Baker was nice enough to sign my copy of his memoir "Alcatraz #1259" and allowed me to capture him for my (608)strangers. Even though a great distance from Wisconsin, we talked a bit of football and he informed me that he believed that Jordan Love would live up to the hype this year and the Packers would make the playoffs. Check out more strangers in the 100 strangers group here on Flickr for more awesome stories!
A cyclist riding in the rain is viewed through the framework of a new BRT stop on State Street in downtown Madison.
I've often spotted Zack cruising around town on his sleek, chopper-style e-bike and have been eager to strike up a conversation with him. As luck would have it, I happened to be walking on State Street when I noticed his bike parked outside a local shop. Braving the cold, I waited a few minutes until Zack emerged, at which point I complimented the distinctive design of his bike. In our chat, I learned that Zack owns two of these e-bikes in addition to five road bikes, though he doesn't have a personal vehicle and instead relies on Zipcar for occasional transportation needs.
I requested a photo of him for my #608strangers, and he happily agreed. We meandered up to Peace Park, where the sun was not obscured by shadows, and I snapped a few frames. I was grateful for his patience, as my hands were a bit cold and shaky in the near-freezing temperatures. Unfortunately, I didn't verify the spelling of his name, so I've spelled it here with a "K" - short for "KICKASS," just like his bike.
If you wish to see more portraits of totally awesome people you may or may not know, I highly suggest joining the 100 strangers group and heck maybe start a project of your own!?
