11th January 2015. Bernina Bahn / RhB ABe 4/4 no. 35, now preserved at the Chemin de fer musée Blonay-Chamby on a charter from Chamby to Broc Fabrique for the Railway Touring Company.

The theme this week for the 52 Weeks group is "edited by someone else." We exchanged a RAW image photo and gave the person freedom to edit it any way they wished.

I traded photos with Melanie Wolczuk

My challenge was to take this already great seascape and somehow enhance it rather than taking away from it. I also didn't want to "flip switches" in Photoshop for the sake of flipping switches - I wanted a purpose for each edit.

(see the original image in comments below)

1. I darkened the mood hoping to enhance the detail, especially in the water and sky.

2. I darkened the water, particularly the bright spots to move the eyes away from those areas and towards the detail area in the horizontal thirds of the shot.

3. I cropped the image to landscape, sacrificing the tree overhang, but moving the subject detail into the thirds and enhancing the wide open space.

4. I accented the boat reflections to highlight the subject

5. I created a subtle vignette to move the eyes toward the center

6. I brought out more detail in the background trees, especially in the subject area.

7. Finally, I saturated the color of the bridge to help balance out the red boat on the left.

Thanks for sharing your photo Mel!

Soaking up the sun!

I could make a book of photos I have taken of these trees in my backyard. As the sun was rising our house filled with an orange hue signaling me to grab my camera and run. I thought something must be on fire, but it was simply a spectacular winter sunrise.

BlindSpot and I have been talking about working w marble. He has made some really gorgeous carved marble pieces recently.

I picked up this chunk from my nieghbors garden bed :)

It is very soft and chalky? and others are more like agate and are too hard to grind. This piece is sparkly. So I guess I learned from this experiment that not all white "garden" marble is from the same vein :)

Much-maligned, but running consistently. Circa-1950 or so, the only model produced by Clarus. Wollensak Velostigmat 50/2.8 lens, coupled rangefinder.

Feels like it's been a month straight of damp, cloudy weather around here. I love the dreariness that emerges in autumn, but still yearn to capture autumn foliage. As much for the way it makes me feel as for how it looks. But no matter how I approach this subject photographically, it really does require some sunlight to fully appreciate. The other day I was making my daily trek to the local cemetery amidst a backdrop of extreme overcast with low level scud clouds chasing along the horizon and a light drizzle falling. Just as I approached the front gate, the sky began to lighten and the sun emerged. The light was dazzling to my eyes after days of cloudiness. The scene before me simply illuminated in glorious color with incredibly dark and brooding background clouds. Without a moment of hesitation I lifted the camera that hung around my neck and began shooting. I longed for a great foreground subject but none was at hand. I moved a few steps to my right to include the tree branches to help frame the scene and enhance the sense of depth that I was feeling. A sense magnified by the expanse of ground that I was looking across. The moment unfolded in about half a minute and then the sunlight simply vanished. Whatever opening had formed in the clouds closed up and that was it. Felt so fortunate that I was in the right place and time to witness it and was able to capture the moment.

for the still life project

It is cross country ski time tomorrow (for the first time this winter) :)

It used to be my son's beanbag but the cat has stolen it. He is super toasty anyway (Orientals do not have much hair so lose a lot of heat) but the beanbag traps and radiates it back.

The Petri Color 35 is a small camera (of the same dimensions like a Minox 35 or a Rollei 35). It has a Cds light meter with match needle action and scale focusing. The camera is of solid all metal build and sports a very nice 40mm lens.
